The basic idea in this theoretical framework is that data exists as a difference in the world An irregularity is data, of any kind, any sort But it is completely meaningless. When you add meaning and you combine data with meaning, what you get is information And, this is of course the main focus of the study of people who call themselves informatitions Information, further that is true that is justified and, that is believed, is knowledge That is the very simple core of Biomedical Informatics And, this idea has been adopted by AMIA and by our school pretty extensively. AMIA, perhaps due to the strong influence of Jack and Todd and the academic forum adopted this view of Biomedical Informatics and is now using it as the way to justify our competencies and a large part of what they expect people to learn during the Clinical Informatics specialty So, what are the core competencies The core competencies a Biomedical Informatician should have according to AMIA and its academic forum are: the ability to acquire professional perspective What this means is that an informatician should be able to understand analyze, discuss the history of the discipline and its relationship to other fields while demonstrating an ability to read and discuss the literature Informaticians should be able to analyze the problem Which means analyze, understand, abstract, and model a specific Biomedical problem in terms of data, information, and knowledge as we have defined them here A Biomedical Informatician should produce solutions Which means take this problem analysis and use it to propose, identify, understand the space of possible solutions and generate candidates A Biomedical Informatician should be able to articulate the rationale behind the solutions basically to explain why this is a good idea and defend it A Biomedical Informatician should be able to carry out the solution Not just talk the talk and this has been a statement point for us A Biomedical Informatician should not just be able to say what's required, but to an extent he or she should be able to do it and implement those solutions We don't really care if it's a prototype or a sub-optimal version, but an information should be able to do what he or she says must be done And, I'll get back to this later An Informatician should hopefully innovate create new theories, create new typologies, create taxonomies create frameworks, create newer presentations, and create new informatics methods to carry out this work An Informatician should know how to work collaboratively And, an Informatician should be able to educate other people and other professionals On their work to disseminate this kind of work and discuss it openly
