I'm a DSS foster parent, how to I get to adopt the children that are in my care?
I get asked this question a lot. My name is Nancy Jo Thomas,
and I've been practicing in Family Court in Anderson, South Carolina for over 20 years now.
If you have DSS foster children in your care,
typically the process is that DSS terminate the rights to the children,
and if you are a pre-adoptive family, or an adopted family, and have
gone through the adoptions application
process.
The DSS will meet with you and give you the
paperwork and the information that you need to proceed with the adoption.
You will then hire a lawyer, and I'm more than happy to do that for you,
you'll get a lawyer who will file the action for you
as the foster parent who wants to adopt.
Most of the time, the DSS will pay
part of your legal fees for this process.
If you have any questions whatsoever about DSS foster care and adoption,
please don't hesitate to call me. My number is
