Narrator: Did you know one in three people over the age of 65
suffers from hearing loss?
The main cause is excessive noise. So be cautious,
the damage may be permanent.
Our ears hear a multitude of sounds everyday.
Talking, music, and background noises.
Healthy ears are very good at focusing in on
useful audio signals and filtering out unimportant noises.
A similar process happens when we hear arguments from
a variety of sources.
We can learn to tell when information sounds legitimate,
and disregard arguments that sound like they are built
upon poor reasoning.
Listen for these poor argument warning signs:
Narrator: Hostile to counterarguments.
Voice: Hearing loss can't be cured,
and anyone who challenges this view is an idiot.
Narrator: Diverting attention from the original argument.
Voice: I really think we should be talking about vision problems,
not hearing.
Narrator: Hasty generalization.
Voice: If that's true, then we must have everyone over 65
take musical training, that's unrealistic.
Narrator: Slippery slope.
Voice: If we provide music training for adults, then pretty
soon we will have to provide music training for everyone.
