Well I'm Philip Hunt and I live in Birmingham I'm Deputy Leader
the opposition in the House of Lords but I also chair, the heart of England and
NHS foundation trust, which is a very big hospital organisation, we
provide services to East Birmingham Solihull, Sutton Coldfield. We also run
Solihull's Community Services as well, and the Chest Clinic in Birmingham.
It's an awesome responsibility we treat over a million people
every year
and we employ eleven thousand staff and maintaining quality safety the same
time as reducing all budgets in real terms that's a real test of the board
of course the chairman has to lead that process.
Well my whole working career has been in the Health service and in fact I came to
Birmingham in nineteen seventy eight
to lead the National Association of Health Authorities and Trust which,
is representative body for those organizations that run the NHS,
so Iv'e been involved in lots of the debates about enhancing the quality of
NHS
and, finding the money to do so.
Well when I came to house of Lords in nineteen ninety-seven I realised
that,
in legislative terms Health is big, every year
there is a new piece of legislation that impacts on the Health Service, it's
not surprising we spend a hundred twenty billion pounds
on health it's all voted for by parliament out of our taxes
so naturally
Ministers, MPs, Parliamentarians take a close interest in what's happening in
the NHS so it's been a revelation to me having worked too many chess
coming to westminster five how much westminster debate c_n_n_ chest i'm as
concerned about it
so we have to think through how to balkanize things
better in the future
with not so much money in real terms but with more demands of course this is
where the connection with universities is so important using universities like
aston
the thinking is being done
for how we can to survive and prosper over the next ten and twenty years
that's why i'm so excited
up my hospitals on myself how pissed cuz connection with such a fantastic
univeristy
well i've had a great
opportunity to be in parliament up in council to enter onion
optimal such a happy huge an actress
organization
it's a real privilege it's very exciting
you know that what you do
is has a big influence all on the quality of services the public at
but it's tough to
we're in an age where people very demanding uh... we need transparency
every four wks is uh... out into the open and say working the public sector
consump i'm still very tough indeed people are very critical
i think the key thing for people eat the public sector is to kind of except that
perhaps the environment in which they operate which keep true to their values
a note that what they are tuning
the public and should what's happened in in mind
it's the same thing universities
when you look at the u_k_ and you look at our future
one thing for sure is we have some very fine universities aston is one of those
we need to treasure a new chip is institutions because they and the
quality of their research and teaching is what we can spend on as a country to
have a good future over the next few decades so on really excited to be
connected to a stand
very very privileged to being given this recognition
i really look forward to working with you list in the future
