We are used to measuring content, but up to now we haven’t been that good at measuring levels of skill.
Reading is retrieving in this mechanical part ; I pick out what the text says, what the document says and, then I include it in my plans,
I relate it to other things I know about and, what’s more, I can find a critical position with regard to that information in order to assess it.
Controlling those three indicators will give me the measurement of my ability.
The teaching-learning process and the assessment of the teaching-learning process,
develop based on theoretical frameworks such as this one, but they have other requirements too. What else do they need?
In addition to this kind of theoretical framework, we need a stable legal framework. Why? A child takes approximately 10 years to learn how to read,
but the outlook for learning will always depend, in part, on the spirit or the legal theory governing that learning process.
What more do we need? We need training for skills. Teachers need to know what it is which we want them to do and how we want them to do it.
Clearly, if I am well trained in what I have to teach, and how I have to teach it,
I will feel much freer, because I will have so many more resources and will surely be able to move away from a textbook topic.
I have to have a multi-genre vision because reading is a basic skill
and therefore a fundamental tool for any kind of learning.
We need consensus, a courageous and broad social commitment, and not to send out contradictory messages.
