[MUSIC - RO SPIT, "SHINE"]
RICK WILLIAMS: Outside of Burn Rubber, Ro and I both have our
hands in a lot of different things, from The
Distinct Life BAU shoe.
--pretty much happy, especially with that--
I have a brand called The Distinct Life, and another
company with Frank the Butcher called NOVEM CREATIVE.
FRANK THE BUTCHER: We have so many
similar ideas and interests.
And it just fully developed.
So we created NOVEM CREATIVE, which is a company where we
collaborate with brands and we develop partnerships.
RICK WILLIAMS: So it's kind of like a multi-city
collaboration that we do.
FRANK THE BUTCHER: I think if it's anymore, it's going to
bring too much attention to the camo.
RICK WILLIAMS: Frank and I both have families.
We both do this for our families.
And it's crazy, we've only known each other for like
three or four years.
FRANK THE BUTCHER: Show it as, like, two pieces, the back
piece and the front.
That's definitely never been done before.
RICK WILLIAMS: He's probably one of my closer friends.
FRANK THE BUTCHER: At times he's my closest friend.
At times, I speak to him more than I speak to people that I
grew up with or people that are in my city.
This is the BAU.
It's like--
RICK WILLIAMS: --pagers and all of the crazy stuff.
FRANK THE BUTCHER: Yeah, it's kind of inspired by old school
"Wall Street," like the movie.
Beepers and--
RICK WILLIAMS: Remember I told you about Jay John?
FRANK THE BUTCHER: What up?
JAY JOHN: What up, my G?
FRANK THE BUTCHER: How you?
JAY JOHN: You got the best hand, my baby.
FRANK THE BUTCHER: My man.
RICK WILLIAMS: Remember that picture I sent you of my man
rocking the show?
JAY JOHN: Onesie.
RICK WILLIAMS: The Santa Claus onesie?
[HIP HOP MUSIC PLAYING]
RICK WILLIAMS: This is him in real life.
JAY JOHN: Yeah, real life.
I wear clothes.
FRANK THE BUTCHER: Yeah, that's crazy.
JAY JOHN: Next one's going to be even wilder.
I think I'm going to do a full scuba suit.
RICK WILLIAMS: He's not joking, dog.
JAY JOHN: No, it's no jokes, no jokes.
FRANK THE BUTCHER: That's crazy.
I don't even know how you be comfortable up there, like--
JAY JOHN: Oh, it's not about the comfort.
It's about the show.
[HIP HOP MUSIC PLAYING]
FRANK THE BUTCHER: Yo son, can we make a t-shirt?
It's not about the comfort.
It's about the show.
RICK WILLIAMS: So what's up with that?
Are we going to do that shirt?
JAY JOHN: If I'm going to get some win burgers on it?
If you're going to put your mans together.
RICK WILLIAMS: You're not going to just let me
put the shirt out?
JAY JOHN: I mean, yeah, you can put it out.
You can put it out.
Yeah, you can put it out.
You can put something in my pocket though, man.
RICK WILLIAMS: I'm going to put something in your pocket.
JAY JOHN: I want to go to the strip club.
[CELL PHONE RINGS]
RO COIT: What up, dog?
Ain't nothing.
RICK WILLIAMS: What you about to get into, man?
RO COIT: --studio, man.
I got to knock out this joint.
Me and Rick both have a lot of things going on.
I'm an MC, Ro Spit.
You've probably heard about me.
Hey, you should roll through, dog.
RICK WILLIAMS: I'd rather go to the dentist
and get a root canal.
And if you're not a rapper, you're just sitting there
like, man, what is there for me to do in this studio?
RO COIT: You've got to be dope in the studio.
I tell people all the time, man.
People ask me, like man, you go to the studio, there's
*** everywhere.
That's for the movies.
That's for TV.
When you go to the studio, it's work.
DENAUN PORTER: You've got to teach them
without teaching them.
I'm particular about who I share that with,
that sort of guidance.
RO COIT: So dig.
They played "Renaissance State of Mind" when the Tigers won,
beat the Yankees.
[MUSIC - RO SPIT, "RENAISSANCE STATE OF MIND"]
DENAUN PORTER: Get out of Dodge.
RO COIT: 50,000 people singing my ***.
DENAUN PORTER: That's crazy.
RO COIT: That *** is wild.
DENAUN PORTER: How do you feel about yourself?
RO COIT: I don't even know right now.
And I've been working with Denaun lately.
He works with Dre.
He's Eminem's hype man.
He still produces for everybody in the game.
DENAUN PORTER: --Barack Obama Mitt Romney battle.
And he was like, you're going to get this work, America.
RO COIT: [LAUGHS]
DENAUN PORTER: You didn't see it?
RO COIT: I'm talking to him, and I'm like, yo, I need some
tracks, man.
He's telling me about these beats and how it was like a
chunk of his life, like right after Proof passed.
DENAUN PORTER: I was depressed and ***.
All them beats on that CD, I did all of
them after Proof died.
And I just don't remember making them.
RO COIT: He was depressed.
And he just--
he was just making beats.
But they're some crazy, amazing beats.
Picked this particular one and I'm like, this is bananas.
Wrote something to it, threw down some lyrics to it.
DENAUN PORTER: I like the way he approached it.
Because I actually like the beat now.
I've got more ideas to actually finish it.
RO COIT: The title of it is "Sean," and we ended up using
it for the intro to this show.
There's one thing missing, one thing.
RICK WILLIAMS: I like to come when they're about done, so I
can hear the song and then keep it moving.
[RAPPING]
[INTERPOSING VOICES]
RO COIT: One take, man.
It's Jay-Z and Rick Williams.
RICK WILLIAMS: ***.
[LAUGHTER]
RICK WILLIAMS: It needs to be stronger.
RO COIT: That's Hulkamania strong right there.
RICK WILLIAMS: We don't need that again.
RO COIT: I'm out here for my family, and I'm out here to
make the world see what I see.
DEVIN WILLIAMS: Am I going with you to the
Big Sean show tonight?
JAY JOHN: The Sean show?
DEVIN WILLIAMS: Yeah.
JAY JOHN: Um, I can see what I can do, try to get you in.
DEVIN WILLIAMS: Tonight is the Big Sean show.
I'm super hype.
Big Sean has been one of my idols for forever.
Is it 18 and up?
JAY JOHN: No, no.
All right, I just want--
JAY JOHN: You're straight.
No, I call him "Seanathan." We had another
name, the Fresh Family.
And somebody that was close to us copywrote the name, and
wanted us to pay them to use it.
I'm brainstorming a new name with the Sean, just
spit the name out.
It should be something like something like Finally Famous.
He's about to move.
Kanye called him.
All right?
DEVIN WILLIAMS: I didn't know this part.
JAY JOHN: Like, I've been trying to get in
contact with you.
You ain't got no people?
You know what I'm saying?
You ain't got no people I can call?
So Sean's like, all right dog.
All right, whatever, dog.
But it was like, no, it's Kanye West.
Everybody's still close.
We've got, like, Mike Posner.
He's in Finally Famous.
A lot of people don't know that.
But that's one of our best friends.
DEVIN WILLIAMS: Dog, I need to be there.
I've been to every other one.
I don't see why this one's got to be so hard.
Just give me the yes.
JAY JOHN: All right, go get me a water.
DEVIN WILLIAMS: Dog, come on.
JAY JOHN: [COUGHS]
DEVIN WILLIAMS: Give me a dollar.
JAY JOHN: [COUGHS]
DEVIN WILLIAMS: Give me a dollar, so I can go--
JAY JOHN: Don't you want to go to the Big Sean show?
[COUGHS]
Is you going to go get the water?
DEVIN WILLIAMS: Can you give me a dollar?
JAY JOHN: You ain't got a dollar?
DEVIN WILLIAMS: I never have cash.
JAY JOHN: Well, they'll charge it.
DEVIN WILLIAMS: All right, dog.
I'll see what I can do.
Just like--
JAY JOHN: I'll see what I can do.
I'll see what I can do.
DEVIN WILLIAMS: Asking Jay John can I go with him, can I
get a ticket, something.
Everybody seems to have tickets.
But I haven't got mine yet.
-I bring presents.
JAY JOHN: Let me see.
Woo!
Unexpected package, see the Neiman's bag, open it up,
leopard slippers.
Wooo!
-That's illegal leopard.
JAY JOHN: That's illegal.
And it's pony.
-That has you all over it, bro.
DEVIN WILLIAMS: What you going to wear these with?
JAY JOHN: I'm going to wear these ***
for swagger and style.
DEVIN WILLIAMS: Oh yeah, hey, talk to Rick and Ro.
Hook me up.
Bro.
Jay John acting stupid on this concert, like I ain't going to
be able to go or something.
-Why don't you buy a ticket?
They're only $40.
DEVIN WILLIAMS: No, I never buy a ticket to concerts.
-Well then you never might not go.
DEVIN WILLIAMS: Bro, stop doing that though.
-Did anybody tell you they were going to get you in?
DEVIN WILLIAMS: Yeah-- no.
-You're hoping the Hail Mary goes through?
DEVIN WILLIAMS: I'm just saying, though.
-I'm just saying you ain't going to that show.
DEVIN WILLIAMS: You going?
-No.
DEVIN WILLIAMS: Why not?
-I'm going home to sleep.
DEVIN WILLIAMS: That's all you ever do.
RO COIT: Looks like Sean just hit me up, bro.
RICK WILLIAMS: Sean just hit you up?
RO COIT: I get a text from Big Sean.
I've got you, Jay John, and Rick.
VIP backstage passes.
RICK WILLIAMS: The big?
RO COIT: The big.
Sean Big.
All set for the night backstage, tix at will call.
What are you doing?
DEVIN WILLIAMS: Back off?
RICK WILLIAMS: Who reads a man's text?
RO COIT: --another man's text message.
We're good for the night, dog.
DEVIN WILLIAMS: What about me?
RICK WILLIAMS: What about you?
It says you--
as in you.
RO COIT: As in I.
RICK WILLIAMS: Rick, and Jay John.
DEVIN WILLIAMS: Yo, y'all are not--
RICK WILLIAMS: It doesn't say Devin.
DEVIN WILLIAMS: Yo, y'all are not about to drop me
with this kind of--
RICK WILLIAMS: It doesn't say LBD.
RO COIT: Devin wasn't in on that.
RICK WILLIAMS: Yeah, he's salty.
He's hurt.
RO COIT: Yeah.
RICK WILLIAMS: Hurt Devin.
RO COIT: Probably mad.
DEVIN WILLIAMS: So it was just confusing.
I'm really hoping I can go.
Both of y'all leaving?
RICK WILLIAMS: We've got to go get ready for the show.
I'll tell my peoples to look for you at Noel night.
DEVIN WILLIAMS: No, I'm going to the show.
Come on.
RO COIT: We're going to see what we can do, though.
You know.
Sometimes--
RICK WILLIAMS: Things work themselves out.
Yeah, it's happening again.
RO COIT: Happening again.
DEVIN WILLIAMS: Come on.
JAY JOHN: All right, dog.
Here you go.
DEVIN WILLIAMS: Thank you.
JAY JOHN: Here, dog.
DEVIN WILLIAMS: Woo!
Right now I'm just super excited.
I'm hyped up.
RO COIT: We knew the whole time.
RICK WILLIAMS: We were going to get him into the show.
RO COIT: We're backstage at the Big Sean concert.
We were at the Big Sean show.
We just started seeing everybody.
RICK WILLIAMS: He came through here
before he was Mike Posner.
It was good to catch up with Mike.
MIKE POSNER: All I wanted to do was make
beats for Big Sean.
I would make 1,000 beats a year.
He would use like two of them.
ROYCE DA 5'9": Shady Records, Bad Meets Evil,
Slaughterhouse, y'all know what it is.
RO COIT: It's one thing to see somebody go from literally
nothing to one of the biggest artists in the game.
BIG SEAN: I can't believe it was sold out.
It was an emotional roller coaster.
I came out kind of little nervous.
-Make some [BLEEP]
noise!
[SCREAMING]
DEVIN WILLIAMS: And it was just like wow, bro.
Wow.
JAY JOHN: It was really emotional.
I could--
I was blown away.
I'm blown away.
BIG SEAN: You from the east side of Detroit?
[SCREAMING]
BIG SEAN: It was angry, it was happy, it was good,
overwhelmed.
I've reached the level of happiness.
It's like my emotions just went ahead.
I'm repping Detroit, ***!
BIG SEAN: You was on Pontiac Recordings?
RO COIT: Yeah.
BIG SEAN: [INAUDIBLE]
Studios?
RO COIT: Yeah.
BIG SEAN: See, y'all fools done come up, man.
RICK WILLIAMS: Thank you.
RO COIT: You remember little Devin?
BIG SEAN: Yeah.
What's up, fool?
DEVIN WILLIAMS: He remembered me, or whatever.
That was real cool.
RO COIT: And we are out.
That's a wrap.
Cut.
-Next week on Detroit Rubber.
