The first point that I want to make is that there is no cure for addiction. It's a condition
we need to manage over the course of our lives. In terms of residential treatment, there are
some other options that a person can try before they go into residential treatment such as
twelve-step programs or outpatient programs. Residential treatment provides the person
the opportunity to focus on their addiction and get out of the situation, out of the context
of their lives, that is causing them to stress, that's causing them pain, that's causing them
discomfort, and focus on their recovery in a community of other people that are healing
and also finding a solution to their addiction problem. It's also very important to note,
when looking for a treatment center, that you are not going to be looking for a spa
or for a place that people will babysit you. You really need to be doing some very serious
therapeutic work there, and what I mean by that is you need to be looking at your underlying
psychiatric conditions. If you are suffering from depression you need to go to a facility
that can address that. You need to go to a facility that can address if you have an anxiety
disorder. You need to go to a facility that has the capacity to deal with trauma that
you may have in your life, because we know that people who suffer with addictions typically
have an underlying issue with depression, anxiety and trauma, so again, it's important
to look for a treatment facility that's not going to babysit you, that's not going to
provide you with spa services, but that's going to help you do the hard serious work
that you need to do to embrace recovery, and embrace recovery not just for a short period
of time, but for the rest of your life.
