My name is Timea Monique Webster.
I really value the fact that I am a black woman.
My family always made sure that I was proud of that.
The good, the bad, and the ugly.
I think my best experiences at UAA continue, and always will be, commencement.
Every year at commencement, since I started working here,
before iI was involved in advancement
I've volunteered at Commencement.
And it put a fire under me every year.
It wasn't the student speeches, 'it wasn't the Pomp & Circumstance'
though I do love 'Pomp & Circumstance'
It was the look in student's eyes that "I've Done It, I've finished."
Not necessarily finished but I was able to look at education in a whole different light.
Like someone said, Cornell West said, "Education is the great equalizer."
Years ago I had no clue what he meant when he said that.
But now, I'm 28 now, so 7 years, so 6 years later I'm like, "Education IS the great equalizer!"
Because when we walk into a room and we both have the same credentials
it's going to come down to who is the most qualified.
You know, who can do this job the best.
But now you're actually in the realm to be in the same category.
And so I think those are my greatest memories, and always will be my greatest memories of UAA
is commencement.
