Welcome to the first Heal's Google+ Hangout on Air Panel discussion. I am Carmel Allen,
and I am the brand ambassador of Heal's, and I will be moderating the discussion.
The topic is the best route to becoming a Designer.
What do you think that makes a great designer? Is it a rounded individual?
It is someone who needs to be... open, and certainly to expose themselves to as much
design as possible, as much work as possible.
I am just wondering how a designer these days can cut through all that external information
and find their own design voice.
As a designer myself I think I fit my designs to each brief and each project as they.. as
they come up.
I am a bit of a comedian, I can be concept heavy on one design or production heavy in
another design. I think you just need to be aware of what you are being asked to do.
Apprenticeships still unseen as prestigious as a degree from a top university. Can I give
that question to Jay? We've got some of your furniture here from your workshops and I know
that you promote apprenticeship and develop young people.
The apprenticeship side of things is just getting them used to design, getting them
used to furniture, getting them used to selling things, and then hopefully they will go into
education or go into employment.
Michelle, you are meeting designers all the time, when they come to you showing new products,
do you ever ask where they are studying or what grade they got in their degree?
I always ask what they are studying, I just.. I love to know their backgrounds, I love to
know what journey they've been on to get to where they are now. But in terms of asking
for the results, the grades, that really doesn't .. that ain't interest me.
I have a question here from Google+, from Mike Brokes: How true is that in the design
industry you are only as good as your last job?
I am going to ask you that, Morgan, you are interviewing lots of designers for the Holborn.
Do you judge them on their last job?
Definitely not. I think it's.. it's about... you always have to come back to the things
that are producing. Good work should be timeless, it should.. it should last, and it should
have that timeless feel to it.
Technology is moving on so fast. It is such an amazing tool, all the new internet based
and.. and digital manufacturing things that we have available that..it would be silly
to ignore them.
Thank you again to everyone for joining us on the hangout.
