My name is Andy Jalfon
and I'm from Number 8 Films.
We’ve been hosting a film night here
we showed Tomboy,
a wonderful film with a brilliant cast.
It explores gender diversity
by having a young girl
pretending to be a boy for the summer.
I think it’s an interesting story because
it explores gender
not just physically, but in the mind.
It’s quite a painful story, in some ways
but also it raises questions
about how you interpret yourself
and how you should be interpreted by others,
without necessarily having to conform
to the opinions of others.
What does gender diversity mean to me?
Well, I think that people are who they want to be
and without discrimination, without stigma.
Being a gay man I understand
a little bit about stigma sometimes
and I think that there’s the same...
or a similar issue is faced with gender.
Because you are predisposed, you have your norms,
your supposed to dress in a certain way
or your supposed to speak in a certain way
but that’s doesn’t, that’s not always the case.
So i think that it’s each to their own
and everyone should be able to
do, be and say what they want to say
and without fear of stigma.
