Hi! I'm Melanie McElroy with Taurus Training for Expert Village and today we are going
to talk about training dogs. So let's talk about the down command with our Welsh Pembroke
Corgi. This is Gibson and Gibson has gone through learning how to pay more attention
when things go by and as Corgi's are want to do, he's been distracted a lot here at
the park. We've also talked about sitting. Corgi's with their long bodies and little
short squatty legs, it's a little bit difficult to get them to sit. You have to bend over
a lot but Corgi's like to lay down. So again there are a couple of different ways we can
go about this. What we are going to do now is actually lure this Corgi into a down and
then start making the reinforcement random. So he's staring off in the distance. First
I'll get a sit, good. Then I am actually going to show him, sit.
This is an example of why it is difficult to teach Corgi's to lie down. Good! Because
they are so long it's difficult to put the treat between their legs yet if you move it
forward, they always go up. So we are going to just have some patience because Gibby's
worth it. At this point you may just be tempted to shove him over but it is better if he learns
to go down of us on belicion. Now I want to do something to set him up to succeed by Gibby,
good! Giving him the reward so that he doesn't get frustrated. This is a perfect example
of what is difficult about getting Corgi's to lie down. Now this is smart dog. Most Pembroke
Corgi's are very bright so he'll figure it out. That little leg just needs to go forward.
We'll try this one more time, punkin. All right, sit. We didn't get him to lie down
in the time allotted so I am simply going to give him a command at the end but I'm sure
he knows what to do. Sit. Good! So we end the session with a success.
