I'm Gabe Garza with today's health news. Football fans, this news is for you. According to a
press release issued by the American Academy of Neurology, a new study found that more
than 40 percent of retired NFL players had signs of traumatic brain injury. Lead study
author said, "This is one of the largest studies to date in living retired NFL players and
one of the first to demonstrate significant objective evidence for traumatic brain injury
in these former players." To conduct the study, researchers gave 40 retired NFL players thinking
and memory tests, as well as brain scans. Using MRIs, researchers looked at the players’
white brain matter. They found that 43 percent of the players fell well below—2.5 deviations—the
standard level of movement that healthy, non-football players experience. The research team also
found that 30 percent of the players had brain damage due to disruption of nerve cells that
send messages to each other. Something to keep in mind when your watching your team
next season. For dailyRx, I'm Gabe Garza.
