This is Martin Shervington and I'd like to show you
how to manage access to your content on Google Plus. So let's look first at ‘who’
can see ‘what’.
So we’re viewing as ‘public’ here. If I just click this drop down
I can change and see how people would see my page depends upon the access
rights have been given.
So let me just explain. If I scroll through, we see the hedge there.
And we see that my posts that are put out
to explain the formatting. And we see a picture of Benjy.
That's viewing as public and I want to see how one person views it. I'm going to put in
Linda Dee.
I know that I've invited Linda Dee to an event so I can see that on my page
she has been able to interact with me on not event
and no one else will see it unless they were invited. And I can see that from
limited.
If I click on limited,
I will see that it was only shared with Linda Dee on this occasion.
So means that
no one else will know that that is there.
So if I return back to public we should see it disappear.
And, there we go.
Next I'd like to explain how this principle applies to YouTube as well.
As you probably know, YouTube is a Google company
and the ‘social layer’ that is Google Plus has gone across one of its
products and services. Now that means that the same principles are going to
apply
if I put in ‘Ripple Rank’
and we search for that movie
or that video I've created.
And I click on it.
And we're not going to watch it now but you can watch that as your leisure for
understanding how to apply principles to ripples.
But what we can do, if I go to ‘video manager’
I can then click on the drop down here
and choose influence and settings and I can change who has access to this.
The way I do that is currently, if I go to Privacy settings and you can see
it is ‘public’.
I click here,
I can have it is ‘unlisted’
so nobody can see it, or can have as ‘private’.
I'm going to choose the ‘private’ setting.
And you'll see a very familiar box comes up.
It says ‘add names’,
‘add circles’, ‘add email addresses’.
So in exactly the same was as with posts
you can restrict access or have it as public.
Just to recap
if I have it as ‘public’,
anyone can view the video.
If I have it as ‘unlisted’ only people with the link can see the video.
and if I have ‘private’ then I choose who sees the video.
Now, if I put in
one of my circles,
and let's have it as the first Commoogling circle I've created here,
and I save changes,
now anybody
who searches
for Ripple Rank,
in the search engine (this is now moving Into Google search)
it's likely
that the video is going to come up
when they search for it.
sSo dependent upon the access rights you've granted for instance which circles,
or which people you've given the right to access it will then come up in
the search results
so this is again see in the social layer slide across so that your search
results whilst being logged into Google Plus
are personalized.
Now this has got an
enormous amount of potential for who has access to what information.
Now I'd like to apply exactly the same principle
to a document in Google Drive.
As you can see
it's the Google video plan that I'm putting together for this series of videos.
And I can
come to share
and click the share button...
now I've given access to Linda Dee, to Dave Santy who does incredible web
stuff
and as you see I've access as well.
So the difference of rights you can see here
Dave Santy I said can comment, but I might like to
Add him in so he can ‘edit’ it as well
or may decide that can only just ‘view’ it.
I can then go through the same process with Linda Dee and decide
what level of access
that she can have.
But this is because I have this as a ‘private’ document as you see here it says
private
I can
increase the number of people that have access by adding in their email addresses and
groups from my contacts.
But I can also if I can change
I can change the whole approach.
I could if I wanted to, click ‘public on the web’
as people who are then searching for the content that then gets indexed now from
this document will be able to find it on the web.
Or I could click anybody with the link,
so that wouldn't just be people that I have given access to or granted
access to,
it would be able to be shared and anyone with the link can then access it.
So this could be handy if you want to get a message out there
virally.
Then we see the ‘private’ setting.
Now, let's go to ‘public’.
we have the exact the same choice do we want to ‘edit, comment or view’.
So we want to think that process through because we don't want anyone to be able
to edit and delete things
and causes a problem later unless we
have them as a trusted source.
Also I suspect you've already worked out that you're going to be able to share it in exactly
the same way as you can share the
Google Plus posts and also your content on YouTube.
So if I just click the Google Plus button here to use this as an example,
I can choose
who has access. So if I only want, say my Commoogling circles to have
access to this particular content,
then I can choose that.
Add a comment there,
and say “videos plan”.
And be able to send that
to that group of people.
Now depending upon the numbers of the people in the group I can also send them
an email as well.
So this video has explained to you
how you can apply the principles of access across
your Google Plus posts, your YouTube channel and your documents in Google Drive.
What you find it that Google Plus is really just Google. It's
just the principles applies to all of their products and services or who has
access to what information in what way.
You choose.
So please subscribe to my YouTube channel for a lot more of this kind of content.
Many thanks.
