Defiant, determined and increasingly desperate.
Supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt have held another day of protests against
the country's military, which deposed their leader from the presidency last year.
Masked and armed, the protesters set tyres on fire, threw bricks and shot fireworks at
police - who responded with tear gas and birdshot.
The demonstration was held in anger over an upcoming referendum which promises to outlaw
religiously-based political parties, and would give more power to the military. But protesters
have labelled it the "Referendum of blood" and want people to refuse to vote.
The military-run government launched a crackdown on the Brotherhood in December, labelling
it a "terrorist group".
Thousands of members have been arrested and their assets frozen, meaning the group now
relies heavily on students to keep up the protests.
The authorities have vowed to go ahead with the referendum as planned, on January 14th
and 15th, despite the threat of ongoing violence.
