My name is Ellen Mulcahy and I am an associate professor in the Science Division. I teach
Microbiology, Cell and Molecular Biology, Public Health, and I also teach in our Biotechnology
career program. Johnson County is a very energetic and challenging place to work. I have the
opportunity here to work with a wide variety of students and also a wide variety of faculty
and people working in administration. I’m able to teach lots of different classes that
allow me to use all of my academic and lab experience that I have obtained over the years,
and I also feel that my job is important because I get to train students for information and
for skills, particularly, that they’re going to use in later years of continuing education,
continuing careers. For example, a lot of my students may be in a nursing program or
in a dental technician program, and in a few years’ time we will see those students now
working out in the community. So it’s an important part of my job to train them in
the skills that they’re going to need to actually be successful in their careers. Another
feature of Johnson County Community College that I appreciate is that we really are our
own little community. We support each other, we help each other, we’re encouraged to
develop our skills in terms of academic and laboratory experience. So we really do have
a lot of opportunities available to us to go and further our own careers and maintain
current in our fields, which of course in the science field is very important. So, overall,
Johnson County Community College is a great place to work for those reasons.
