Welcome to Cengage Learning’s “How do I get my test banks into Canvas using Cognero?”
This is an installment of the Digital Course Support self-training video series for Instructors.
Our agenda for this video is to guide you through the steps of
Exporting your test bank from Cognero. Importing your test bank into Canvas by using a Cognero
exported bank, or by using your test bank files from your instructor companion site,
and lastly, creating a test from your new bank.
Once you have opened a test or test bank in Cognero, from the Editor Pane, select File
and Export and then Blackboard 7.1+. This will create a zip file with the bank
of questions. Choose to save it to your hard drive, flash drive, or network drive. For
this example I’ll save to my Desktop because it’s easiest to locate.
If available, you can also use the test bank files located in your Instructor Companion
site. Open the Instructor Companion site from inside your Instructor Resource Center account
at Cengage. Locate the Test Bank link on the left, read and accept the licensing agreement,
and then choose to save the “Blackboard Test Bank Files.” These will include all
the chapter test banks for your book.
Next, log into your Canvas Instructor account and navigate to the course you wish to import
the test bank into. Once you have selected the course, click on the “Course Setup Checklist"
button, located on the right side of the page.
You should then see a list of links roll up from the bottom of the screen. Under the “Next
Steps” heading, click on the "Import Content" link on the left. This brings us to the "Import
Content” wizard. From here, you will want to click on the “Content Type” and choose
“Blackboard 6/7/8/9 export zip” from the drop-down menu. In the Source section click
on Browse and select the Test Bank zip file that you've exported from Cognero.
Choose a bank you want to add it to, or create a new bank. Click Import.
You will then see that your content is now being imported into the course. Wait a few
moments until “Complete” appears next to the import.
To create a Test from the newly imported bank of questions. Select Quizzes from the left
pane, and in the upper right, click “Create New Quiz”. First, enter a title for your
quiz. Next, under the Settings tab, select the preferences such as number of takes, whether
it will be timed or not, whether it is for practice or graded, etc. To pull in your questions
from the new test bank, click on the Questions tab. Select “Find Questions.” When the
“Find Questions for Quiz” window opens, select your question bank on the left. This
will load the questions from the test bank on the right. To add questions, click the
box next to the question or click “Select All.” Click the “Add Questions” button
at the bottom of the window. Click Save. You can preview your new quiz by clicking Preview
and when you are ready, make sure to Publish the quiz so that your students can see it.
Repeat this process to import additional chapter test banks into your Canvas course.
