Financial Help for College
Looking for financial help for college? Then you'll want to file a FAFSA. And you'll want
to file it correctly, completely and as early as possible.
This FAFSA help tip has to do with college savings plans, in particular 529 plans. The
titling on these accounts is typically Mom or Dad’s name for the benefit of, or FBO,
and then the student’s name. 99% of the time. So make sure when you list these account
values, you list them under the parent’s assets. They’re currently treated as assets
of the parent.
Now if you have an educational IRA or a Coverdell IRA, those are listed as an asset of the student.
You want to list those accounts in the section asking about student assets. So remember,
529 plans are currently treated as an asset of the parent, and educational or Coverdell
IRAs are student assets.
