i just have always thought that too often in government just like in many corporations the focus of management tends to be on the next day
the next quarter instead of the next decade and the next century
and in government we failed
generally to make the kind of
infrastructure investments that we should be doing
we don't invest in our schools or our bridges
we don't work on systems that make
government more efficient and let people have access to services better
we too much focus on the next election or the next news cycle
and the good news is that
ibm is one of those companies that really has had a vision understands the long-term
needs and has focused on
doing that which is why it's made a hundred
the reality is that citizen
cities an organizations
that don't look ahead get left to far behind
and that's why at least in our administration we've always tried to take the long view
now we have based our policies and investment decisions
not on whether they will generate headlines or votes
although both would not be bad
but on whether they'll make our city better in the years ahead seriously
i have always believed that those elected officials that try to lead from the back and get on bandwagon's
are those that in the end don't succeed real leadership is
going having a vision saying the public elected me or in case of a
corporation a board appointed to lead
and to make those decisions and
that's what we've tried to do
here and it certainly what sam has done at
the head of ibm
basing your policies and decisions
on the future really leads to a brighter future
