Hi, my name is Brandon Archer. And, on behalf of Expert Village, I would like to show you
a series on how to conduct preparation beats and different ways you can show cut-offs while
conducting. So, the first thing I am going to talk about is the preparation beat. This
is the opening beat the conductor gives to show the ensemble when to begin. This happens
at the beginning of pieces. It can also happen in between certain movements. And, in a rehearsal
setting when you are rehearsing an ensemble, the conductor can often skip ahead and start
the ensemble in the middle of a piece of music. Sometimes they do this, instead of starting
at the beginning they start in the middle so they can work on specific spots and different
techniques they want the ensemble to have practice on. So, it is good to learn how to
begin the ensemble in the beginning and also how to begin them in the middle of a piece.
