ICTs help reduce electricity consumption by one third.
What is the fundamental goal of this European Research Project?
ENERsip project, in which Charles III University is participant,
is aimed at the design, development and validation
of a communications infrastructure
to reduce the electricity consumption in homes
integrating micro-generation entities,
as is possible in the case of solar cells.
How is the ENERsip platform intending to achieve said objectives?
On the one hand, the ENERsip platform will provide users with information
on both overall as well as individual consumption
of home appliances, in order to identify the appliances
that do not function correctly and to suggest solutions,
while at the same time promoting good practices
that help reduce consumption and lower electric bills.
And on the other hand, ENERsip platform
will take automatic actions
to try to adjust consumption and generation to district level.
Examples of these kinds of actions can be
to postpone programmed operation of some home appliances,
like washing machines, dishwashers...,
to a period during which the generation is at its best in our district.
Or to increase the temperature of the cooling system (air-conditioner)
or to reduce the temperature of the heater
during the period when there is a valley in generation in our district.
To ensure that we will employ technologies like smart sensors and actuators,
machine to machine (M2M) communications, and web applications.
How is the UC3M collaborating in this project?
The Charles III University took part
in designing the communications architecture,
and in validating it through simulation mechanisms.
It also participated in the efforts of dissemination,
by creating international scientific publications.
What are the most outstanding results of this European project?
The ENERsip platform was validated through a pilot unveiled in Israel.
Said pilot involved three sites,
three houses located in three different geographical points.
The houses meet the consumer, generator and prosumer profiles.
On the one hand, we have a house with only a consumer infrastructure,
another with only a generation,
and the third with both a consumer and a generation.
The benefits and performance of the ENERsip platform
were evaluated with the use of software simulations,
verifying the attainment of the initially established goals.
