The mother of the US Nay Yard gunman who shot and killed 12 people has apologised to the
victims' families.
Aaron Alexis, who went on a shooting spree last week killed a dozen people aged between
46 and 73 just three miles from the White House. The former Navy reservist was killed
in a gun battle with police officers. His mother Cathleen spoke of her grief.
"Our son, Aaron Alexis, has murdered twelve people and wounded several others. His actions
have had a profound and everlasting effect on the families of the victims. I don't know
why he did what he did, and I'll never be able to ask him why. Aaron is now in a place
where he could no longer do harm to anyone and for that I am glad. To the families of
the victims, I am so so very sorry that this has happened. My heart is broken."
His family also said that he had been treated for his mental health problems since August.
