Welcome to our second day of
live Iowa high school basketball
tournament coverage here on
statewide Iowa public
television.
Hello.
I'm Paul Yeager and throughout
the night, IPTV sports will
bring you the games, highlights,
analysis and features from right
here on our on-site sports desk.
First with jump into tonight's
matchup in the 3A, 4A and 5A
championship and show you how
those teams made their way out
of the semis.
3A, the cadets and the
universitiy Christian knights.
Making their fourth trip but
early on crestwood would take
control of the game.
Because of Savannahic canning
from the right side.
And the inside give and go
there.
The sophomore would have a huge
game for the night.
Again they go Kiel, turnaround
shot off the glass.
It's good.
Finishes the game with 20 points
with plays like that.
In the third quarter, it would
be Madison, the coach's
daughter, drive, kick.
Keeping the cadets in this ball
game, but Cassidy beyoung came
to play.
The junior hits the J.
From the left side, same play.
Leading scorer, 16 points.
Tonight, they're on a 9-0 run
late in this ball game to win a
spot in the championship, and
they would play a team that
could be a short distance away
and one they know very well.
The bullets would have six
players with mothers or
grandmothers that played at
state on the 6 on 6 game.
History on their side and early
on, Andrea Larsing and dasy
massner.
And making the drive --
In the second quarter, despite a
bloody nose, Alexis Conaway
wouldn't be slowed.
She gets fouled and connects,
and then does it on defense with
the steal.
She's fouled.
With 28 points in the first half
alone.
In the second half, Heidi with a
pitch to Rachel.
Just too much Conaway on moves
like that.
She's headed to Iowa state to
play bo volleyball, not basketball.
She broke a record set in 1994
by Janell grim with 44 points.
Bim game, Laura Leonard.
How do you contain her if you're
unity Christian?
>> A great question and what a
lot of coaches are asking.
How do you contain her?
Multiple ways.
Try to attack her, get her in
foul trouble, get her on the
bench.
Try to double team and
triple-team her if can you do
that.
Also, if you do that, you have
to contain her teammates and not
allow the teammates to have
career nights as well.
>> And Conaway, impressive down
low.
The coach likes to keep his
team, they've reached under ten
per quarter.
If you just let Conaway have ten
points each quarter, they might
be in this ball game CTS exactly
what they want to do.
Muddy it up defensively.
Keep it in the 40s and 50s.
Slow it down a bit and see if
they were win the ball game that
way.
>> Know strategy, take the ball
at her inside.
Maybe get her in foul trouble.
>> If you were do that.
I think if you can set yourself
up, maybe disguise thing, some
screen sets and really attack,
you might be able to go right at
her, but she's so athletic, she
blocks a lot of shots.
You have to be careful in that
regard as well.
>> Schools 1.4 miles apart.
Battle for orange city our 3A
game.
Now to 4A, the second game
tonight of our triple header.
The semifinals, perfect, top
ranked in 4A against Carlisle,
the underdog story of the year
and tournament.
Last year 1-22.
And here they are a game away
from state on plays like that by
Mary grace.
Great move inside the paint.
Jordan Mosier kicks to to Taylor
wagner from the top of the T.
A nice shot.
Second quarter.
Agatha buyer, two more.
Great assist by buyer.
Carlin again knows how to pass
the ball.
Taylor Frederic, the eight-foot
jumper, good.
Third quarter, Hannah.
Gets the inbound pass from
wagner.
Back to wagner.
Three ball corner pocket's good.
14 points for wagner.
The first season, the coach has
done a tremendous job at
Carlisle.
At red oak last year but too
much Carlin down the end.
S
Taylor Frederic, on the
championship game.
Carlisle finishes the year 20-7.
They live to play another night.
Who wool they match up against?
The winner of western Dubuque
and this was the night cap on
Wednesday.
Or on Thursday.
This was a good one as well.
Low scoring game, though,
between these two.
Bobcats early on.
Good hustle by Molly.
She gets it to Megan Moss.
They break the pressure now.
And, again, top of the key.
The pass for Morgan.
Good offensive ball handling
there, and then, goes Harlan.
Back outside to Armstrong for
three.
That's a nice looking shot.
That's Meredith ocean who hit
it.
To Gabby Doud.
That's Morgan.
9 points for the sophomore.
And another point for messler
and rose look at this move to
the hole.
The defenders and puts it up.
The team's lead are scorer.
This week inside the paint, the
Bobcats headed to the title game
way 30-23 win in that one, and
Laura in 4A, about redemption.
Harlan was so close last year
losing in the last second, but
it's about pressure if you're
western Dubuque.
>> Definitely you have to take
care of the basketball.
Turnovers have been a problem in
this tournament, but they're in
the title game in spite of it.
26 turnoverser in the first.
17 in the second.
Can't have that in a
championship game and have to
believe Harlan will turn's the
heat.
>> And not a big force in the
last game.
Taken out.
You take that blueFRINT you're
looking at matchups if you're
western Dubuque?
>> Yeah.
If you can go inside, maybe get
mismatches or go right at her
and try to get her out of the
ball game.
They also have a player in
Taylor Frederic that is also a
big presence on the inside as
well.
You're right.
They have to get her going.
Only 8 points in that semifinal
game.
>> Coach Zach in his second
title game in his second year
and any nerves from him, do you
think?
>> I don't think so.
I think probably the biggest
thing for them is to -- look at
it that they were here a year
ago, and now have another
opportunity.
>> All right.
That's class 4A coming up at
6:00.
At 8:00, our final game of
coverage.
That is a game that looks a
little familiar.
We could be seeing a rematch.
They're your defending state
champs, facing off, they brought
in three division 1 players
including Blair.
Early inside.
It's Thomas, nice fadeaway shot.
She has great inside post moves.
She said where did she learn
those?
She said Dr. Tony brought those.
And Haley, she's headed to
Bowling Green, finishes with 15.
Thomas went flying early on
after this battle in the third
quarter.
Thomas thinks she had a hole.
Headed to Iowa state.
And with the coach, getting back
to her second title game in two
years.
It would mean hot shooting by
Jessica Cole with 16.
Three of them coming by four
right there, that's abbey.
Abby.
She and her sister Annie here
last year.
A chance to play again for the
title and could be facing a team
they're very familiar with, the
Catholic maroon, facing off
against a player many people
know.
That's Haley who does the gator
chop coming out.
Headed to the University of
Florida.
But it wasn't Hayley that was
the story for the little hawks.
It was number 30, Courtney
Jones.
Bekaa Hittner, the super
sophomore, and Bob and Sharon
Hansen, she was big.
So was Jones.
Jones, another 3.
13-2 the biggest lead city high
in this ball game.
Early on they led, but --
Bekaa hempner keeps the maroon
in this ball game.
Tiara Washington for 3.
Saying we're not going anywhere
yet, but in the end, the fourth
quarter was huge.
It got started here.
Butler.
It's a three to give them room
for the first time the lead of
the ball game.
5:20, fourth quarter.
And Bekaa hits the bucket and we
will have a rematch in class 5A.
These two teams know each other
very, very well, but it's that
super sophomore for downing
Catholic in Bekaa.
>> I don't know if she realizes
how good she can be, because she
is very good and had a really
night state tournament.
24 points in the first game.
19 in the second and gotten to
the free-throw line a lot.
That's key to her game because
of the dribble penetration, can
get herself to the line and
that's where she scores a lot of
her points.
>> And we didn't see -- usually
don't put defensive highlights.
The biggest on Haley.
She was outstanding down low.
>> She really was.
She is the glue that keeps this
team together, and she doesn't
score a lot.
She's not in the scoring column
often, but she just does all the
little dirty work that needs to
be done.
All the little things that help
her team win and she is a huge
force and a big part of this
team.
>> Southeast, a brutal schedule.
Six losses.
Five of them to tournament teams
including Dowling Catholic.
>> Great preparation for
tonight.
Gets you ready for title game.
You've seen them once already
this season.
You know what's coming at you.
This just gets you tournament
ready.
>> Wells Fargo arena is the
perfect place for this game.
Six miles from the Doug Catholic
campus, eight miles from the
southeast campus.
See you later tonight, Laura.

>>> A lot of great people make
this tournament possible, and a
lot of great organizations as
well, and one of them is the
Iowa bankers association.
They give a scholarship before
each and every game and we get
to hear a little about each girl
who wins this scholarship and
what it takes to get that
scholarship.
Let's find out more with John
Sorenson, CEO and president of
the Iowa bankers association,
and save the analysis for a
moment.
Talk banking.
Why did the Iowa bankers care
about this tournament?
>> Paul, you know, we have a
bank in almost every community
that's represented here in the
state tournament, and as a
result, they've worked very
closely with their kids to
create a brighter future.
That's why we like this tie-in
with the boys and girls
basketball tournaments, because
we can recognize students who
have shown exceptional
achievement not only on the
court but also in their
communities and academically as
well.
>> And they are some super
girls, that are winning this.
I don't know how you pick the
scholarship winner.
I'm sure it's not easy.
>> Very difficult.
One of the best things Iowa
produces is great young people.
We'd like to see them actually
stay in Iowa and even consider
financial services as a
potential occupation if they do,
because we have plenty of
opportunities in our state if
you look at the footprint of
both banking and insurance in
the state of Iowa.
>> And we also appreciate your
support of our broadcast on Iowa
public television.
Why partner with you?
>> You do wonderful things and
deliver programs like this,
first of all, and many other
educational programs, and we
thank you for all you do.
>> John sourcenson, Iowa
bankers, thank you so much.
>> Thanks, Paul.

Please remain standing as we

O SAY, CAN YOU SEE
BY THE DAWN'S EARLY LIGHT
WHAT SO PROUDLY WE HAILED
At the twilight's last
GREEMing
Gleaming
Whose broad stripes and bright
stars through the perilous
fight
O'er the ramparts we watches
were so gal lengthily
streaming
Are and the rockets' red glare
The bombs bursting in air
Gave proof through the night
that our flag was still there
O, say, does that star-spangled
banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free
And the home of the brave
