I was just looking at this article about aerobic exercise helping older women at risk for dementia and
I guess I'm looking for the silver lining to my situation where and I dont have a car
I have to walk a long distance just to get anywhere like to the store
or to the library, or the bank.
So it says that regular aerobic work outs increase the size the brain's memory area in older women
and may help slow the progression of dementia,
which I don't think I'm worried about having dementia at this point; I'm only 61 years old.
but I am looking for benefits to walking
and the study is from the British Journal of Sports Medicine released April 8, 2014.
There were 86 women involved from ages 70 to 80.
They had mild memory problems also known as mild cognitive impairment which is a common risk factor for dementia.
For six months the women did twice-weekly hour-long sessions of aerobic exercise.
29 of them had their hippocampus size checked again after completing the exercise programs.
Those that did an entire six-months of aerobic training had a significant enlargement of the hippocampus.
There was an indication that an increase in hippocampus size was associated with poorer verbal memory
I'm not sure what a verbal memory is.
The article concludes that the findings do indicate aerobic exercise does slow the shrinkage of the hippocampus
in women who were at risk of developing dementia.
I'm putting the link for this article in the description at YouTube If interested go check it out.
In any case that's one more reason to be happy that I'm now walking instead of riding around town in a car.
