Love.
It's love for cars, love to buy cars,
love to trade cars, love of car marketing, love of car funding, love of car credit.
Real serious!
It's too serious
Wow!
I'm gonna leave that for me, ok?
Ok.
Guys, our next guest.
Our next guest?
Please, turn on the lights so we can see the people...
Im starting to feel the heat!
Wow! They are!
Woah, turned on the lights and put the music.
You can do now, you can do.
We are ready.
Guys, our next guest is José Luiz Portella.
He worked in quite alot of public service areas, in health, in sports...
He implanted the system "Alfabetização Solidária".
He was the secretery of subway transports.
Civil Engineer... He understands about traffic projects, about transit...
And we started to think:
José Luiz Portella, it was you that invented that thing,
when we go catwalk on the school of Samba, there is that guy, who says stuff like this:
"Come, come come on! Stop, stop, stop".
"Come, come come on! Stop, stop, stop".
Us... huh? Portela, I never seen such beauty, when we go...
With you guys, José Luiz Portella!
Welcome José Luiz, you will explain everything, please, ok?
I'm wary.
Guys, I will only read because the test passed it's time.
So it's here, it needs to be granted.
Guys, there will be music but... The first one didn't come.
There will be some interactivity with music. The music is important on this.
The volume needs to be a little more higher.
Too low!
There's another music going on...
Hey Maurício!
It's the first music, interval, and then comes another one.
There's the second music...
I will start... but it's only the first one, the second one is starting.
Let's do it!
The introduction song is a "Tango Flamenco".
I can't see anyone here!
Well friends, I'm here to propose you to change São Paulo.
In february of 1922, a group started to realized
the "Modern Art Week" in this city
to change the language, to change the language and to also change São Paulo.
In that time, it was provincial and conected to the values of foreignness...
Mario de Andrade published the famous poem " Paulicéia Desvairada",
and in it's introduction, called interesting introduction.
And conclued to estimulated the change:
"Every song of liberty comes from prison".
So,
every act of libertation is born in opression.
It's a figurative sense, but living as we are right now is like a prison.
I propose to quit the prison.
It's a city that can offer everything and we can't enjoy almost none of it.
We enjoy much less than what we brag in saying that São Paulo has.
When we talk to someone about something that São Paulo has,
in our particular life, we do not enjoy it all.
We need another "1922 Week", another "Paulicéia Desvairada".
São Paulo needs to be more enjoyable. A better place to live.
It makes no sense to waste all that the city gives us and...
realize a new exercise of frustation every day.
Enough of passing through this city running afraid, in a hurry.
Without looking at it, not enjoying it as a tourist,
as a citizen in London, in Paris, in Madrid and New York.
The propose is ambitious. It's to start this change here
and engage other people who are trying to do it in a hidden way, lonely, each one on it's own way.
Some have given up or see it with a certain fear this flurry of inconsistance.
which we are up to tolerate.
It’s a revolution to be done with method, with perseverance, with the strength of our will.
With the strength of our São Paulo's soul.
We’ve not been born to be mere expectors.
Having in mind that the essence of transports is sinergy,
the union of all efforts towards the very same end, the same modals all together,
I invite you to feel this presentation, more than to listen, but to feel,
working within yourself the synesthesia; the union of all feelings.
We are all anesthetized in relation to São Paulo.
The proposal is that you feel the music and let it induce you the desire to live in a better city.
Image #1
I invite you to a revolution.
This is the current map of track transportation in São Paulo.
It’s an invitation for a conscious revolution,
for that the turmoil of this change takes you to the calmness and to the usage of the city.
There are only two pilars, only two... The first one is already in progress,
we must speed it up and make it work as a catalyzer.
It’s the Metropolitan Transportation Expansion Plan.
It’s possible to have by 2014 over 420 km of quality transportation.
Together, subway and CPTM, the train transportation,
with subway quality, can reach 450 Km by 2016.
It’s already ongoing, has a plan, money and framing.
This plan is essential, at this size.
It’s essential, fundamental but not enough.
The secret is not the size in km.
The 2014 map... Image #2
This is the expansion plan, as you can see, this is the way.
All city is going to be reached by subway and high quality train,
and to this will be added the VLT, a luxury kind of tram, a surface track tram.
The secrecy here is the formation of a network, with lots of connections.
Nowadays we have few connections in São Paulo,
few transfer connections stations and take to "Se Station".
Our subway system was planned to work as a cross kind of system.
Red and blue lines.
There is a daily outflow of 780.000 people at the "Se Station",
which means bigger than most of the cities. Managing that station is a great challenge.
This plan foresees, beside connections,
actions that work together with different integration modals.
The train drops you in somewhere station.
It’s an old concept.
You are on your own.
A subway station integrates the citizen to the city, and we go further beyond that…
The station takes the citizen to his final destiny.
Image #3
This is the "Sacoma Station", it’s an example.
For that, we need to put stations in the same building, without risks,
without the fear of movimenting, without rain, without sun,
Bus terminal, taxi terminal, big parking lots and the bikes.
Bycicle parking for those who uses bikes, loane bikes, bike lanes that get to the station and
That run along the line as an option, offices to repair and dressing rooms for showers.
The bicycle system of Paris was not projected to walk around the city.
It was projected to be an option for the subway.
With all this integration, you will be able to get to your destiny with all these stuff, or on foot...
With 420 and 450km, with this system you will be able to travel to any place at the city,
out of one place and keeps using the network and it’s things until you get to the door of your destiny.
Bus, train, bike: this is the concept to hug the city.
Getting it within your hands. The power to movimenting free, secure,
fast and comfortable.
The key to this are the conections of this integration, giving the capillarity that we aspire.
We need to complete certain regions with corridors of busses that have overpass.
The taxis and vans needs to adapt to the bus.
The system has a hierarchical
that if implanted, permits a dynamic, harmonic movement,
faster and more inteligent.
Today, all this information
about movimentation of all of that stuff can be at the range of the cellphone.
That each one of you will have the option when you go out home.
What you will use in this entire system. This plan, is here, functioning.
It’s keeping an eye on it, it’s being above, it’s charging for us not to lose deadlines.
We can’t lose the rhythm.
Image #4
Who lives in the Campos do Jordão weather, in Serra da Cantareira,
Will be able to get the car or the bike and leave it in Tucuruvi,
Getting the line 1, conect it with the line 5,
leave at one station and getting the free bike,
and make nautical sport in Guarapiranga.
How many people did nautical sport in Guarapiranga?
That this city permits?
And backwards.
That second pilar is the most daring one, this one’s here. Let’s go on to the second pilar,
which will be firm if we believe.
The bike…
Bike is the future.
Video.
Short, huh?
It is not only to get bikes to the streets.
It’s about a more complex infrastructure.
Starting with the implantation of very safe bikelanes in the beltways,
in the large avenues, the avenues over floodplains and rivers…
The use of those avenues situated at valley bottoms is very important for the bikes,
because they are flat.
Allowing people get to other places in the city in a smooth path.
There is no solution for traffic jams without car restriction.
That does not mean necessarily tolls and pikes, which may be used,
because there are certain regions, like downtown,
where public transportation is enough…
The main restriction is the trip shortning,
by making parking lots at various points of the city,
in a way that you, instead of making a 10 km or 20 km trip,
you make it in 2 km, by parking your car at a station,
use public transportation and on your way back you do the same...
We shall induce this trip shortening,
instead of using the car all the way to work.
Image #5
Here are some bikelanes, some were already constructed:
Caminho verde, Rio Pinheiros, bikelane…
that exists, this entire system.
Also, we are going to need to complete more than I just said.
As with the implementation, complete a plan that the prefecture got,
that still isn’t being made, but it got 100 km of bikelanes,
some of it already contained on these bikelanes of valley bottom.
And to complete this vast bikelane system.
And use the “Bikeboy”, to substitute the “MotoBoy” and show it works, and a lot.
It’s hard.
Yeah.
Changing is hard, everything is hard, changing São Paulo is ambitious.
But being stuck in this “prison” is a lot worse.
So, let's try to quit this “prison”.
The idea is: “Without knowing what’s impossible, he got there and did it”.
Impossible is many times, what we aren’t brave enough to test.
They are fundamental accomplices, in this infrastructure, they are part it:
Green streets, car restrictions, traffic calm and with less velocity and less vehicles and less signaling,
for pedestrians and bikers that doesn’t exist in the city.
People who attended the “Virada Cultural” and was a tourist, was completely lost.
Image #6
Here you can see:
In various cities there are mechanisms of urbanism,
green streets, machanisms, green rotatories that decrease the car velocity.
Besides the bike promotion, of the modal,
that today has 370.000 travels per-day, and that isn’t little,
72% of this is for jobs,
with this all these compliments I just said the city will be really different.
There will be change, a peacefull city where you can see, enjoy, focus on what it got.
The bike advent will provoke other behaviors, this will be a big change, it will make a big diference.
Adapt with the city, you can walk around it,
you can feel it at first hand, friendly, seeing it without any hurry.
The idea is: slower, it’s waking up without any roadkills,
work without being anxious, eating in breakfast time without belly aches later.
The Paulista Avenue is a symbol,
A crucial symbol. The view from Paulista is a symbol of São Paulo.
In all the country, in all the world, the view from Paulista is an amazing symbol.
The avenue is a special place, enough of running trough it as if we were getting rid of that space.
São Paulo may not recognize Brazil, but all the cities in Brazil recognize São Paulo,
and it’s biggest symbol is the Paulista Avenue.
it will be our symbol, there we have to walk and enjoy the view as walking on a park,
that can be repated every day.
Image #7
For those who thinks that São Paulo is an awful place, believe me: it can get a lot worse.
It doesn’t exist a "stop" the traffic, because people arrive somewhere, let their cars,
and after a while, they begin to movement,
but it can get slower every day.
This is one of the worst traffics in the entire world,
the city of Lagos in Nigeria.
It’s a big country, the one that most grows in Africa and it’s producting this.
Exactly what the growth is producting.
This is the central city of Lagos, and we are walking to that.
And why isn’t people, watching all this war,
having their own habits and procedures, willing to change that?
You do not change habits just like that, by sitting at the couch watching TV.
That is why isolated education campaigns,
with no profile no backgrounds, souless,
won’t reach anywhere and will only be money waste...
with rare exceptions.
It won’t be an empty advice that will change your habits,
otherwise the whole world would have changed so far…
That's got to have feeling and attitude.
Bike, by the way the city will have to adapt itself to it,
will induce more than a simple modal,
but a transformation of the city’s own soul,
A kind of rhythm change, as if we turned the music on,
a kind of music that make people shake their bones out.
This is the spirit.
This is what the conspiracy is all about
to create na enviroment where the behavior towards the city changes, a new look,
a new procedure. Let’s rock...
Image #8
This sense of calm,
here is an exemple of respect,
one of the most important principle that must be incorporated is that the city does not belong to cars,
And does not have to be planned for cars.
Suffocating the bike rider is not only suffocating a person, but a way of life,
a way of being.
And why is that so hard to change? Why is that so hard?
We need social mobilization... And there is none nowadays.
Gather 300 people is a damn record.
Why isn’t there a change?
Image #9
Computers have become the worst street occupation ever,
street mobilization.
The high information flow and the high speed these informations reach the youth
made these same people hostages of the ready made data...
And the young ones are the agents of mobilization.
There is a creativity lack,
await of na information that’s already there... on hand.
There’s no street occupation.
It’s like everybody...
...every youngster were kind of satisfied by having the permission
to use our streets, as fast as they can to get home back to their computer.
Their cities have become their computer borders.
The social networks, cell phones, "Second Life", music... The imagination.
Imagination is the change architect and the inconformism is the catapult of change.
They give up the city and run soft and submissively to the safety of their virtual world.
There’s no opression there, they look for confort, a self made world.
Your own worlds.
Mobilization makes waves as rocks make waves when thrown at lake waters.
Image #10
Let’s stand up and engage towards what is ours,
making the city not a madness that surround us.
Let’s make concentric circles,
the dissimination power of concentric circles do not loose reference points,
but make them go far beyond.
Everything starts with mobilization.
Let’s start it by giving Paulista Avenue a big hug...
Saturday, by bike or foot.
It’s the first step to reconquer the property Bond we have lost.
Let’s take over the Paulista and start from there the city we aspire.
Let’s start a revolution.
São Paulo is got to be quieter, more peaceful.
Only a revolution is capable of that.
Thank you!
