Now we're going to see the Old Santa Barbara Mission.
It was founded by Franciscan monks in 1786,
on the feast day of Saint Barbara.
This mission is also called the "Queen of all California missions".
The mission's surroundings.
In front of the mission is a laundry pool.
It was constructed in 1808 by Chumash Indians living nearby.
Before the arrival of the Spanish
the Chumash population may have numbered up to 15,000.
Europeans brought diseases Chumash had no natural resistance to,
and the population has dropped to 200 by the year 1900.
Now there are about 5,000 Chumash Indians.
