Is it bad to charge your iphone all night?
For the first generations of cell phones, charging it all night could over-charge the
battery.
And that would shorten its life.
Assuming it didn’t overheat and melt down.
That’s not good. At least an iPhone isn't literally nuclear, though I wouldn't be surprised
if they invented one.
But the latest iPhone models have over-charge protection. In fact, you could plug it in
to charge it when sitting at work and when you get home.
Then it is just a waste of electricity.
Or at least you aren’t ruining the phone when using a USB connection that also charges
it.
I’ve heard that you shouldn’t let it discharge all the way because it won’t recharge, but
recharging it often shortens life, too.
Battery efficiency decreases over hundreds or thousands of recharges. Running the battery
all the way down is like letting a car run out of gas.
You can refill it.
But running all the way out leaves it vulnerable to damage, or not being able to refill all
the way again.
Or the car getting hit by someone else when you stall, having run out of gas.
With the latest generation of iPhones, you can’t really over charge it. That doesn’t
mean other phones can’t be over-charged.
Or melt down.
They won’t melt down, just overheat. Though it is rare for them to stop working because
they let the smoke out.
Say what?
It’s a joke. That the electronics stopped working because the smoke they run on got
out.
I guess that means Apple products are pretty good, because no one has had to make that
joke to explain the situation to me.
At least you can literally charge it day and night without toasting it, unlike other phones.
