Earthquakes and volcanic activity shake the Philippines and Indonesia. Philippine personnel
are on alert and civil defense officials have identified at least 39 areas in the Bicol
region to serve as evacuation centers in case the Bulusan and Mayon volcanoes erupt on Luzon
Island. From Monday, May 16 to Tuesday, 144 volcanic tremors were recorded at the Bulusan
volcano. During the same time period, five volcanic temblors were also recorded at the
Taal Volcano in Batangas, where a permanent danger zone is already in effect due to danger
of steam-driven explosions with high concentrations of toxic gases. On Tuesday morning, a 5.6-magnitude
quake hit south of Java, Indonesia, centered 140 kilometers south of Malang. Fortunately,
none of the volcanic or earth tremor events resulted in damage or injuries.
With thankfulness for the safety of the Philippine and Indonesian people, we pray for the cessation
of such potential dangers as humanity’s gentler ways help stabilize the ecosphere
