Hello, my name is Marton Varady, and I'm a Global Health Innovations Fellow.
And I'm working on the CryoPop project which is a low-cost cryotherapy device
intended to treat pre-cancerous lesions
of the *** in the developing world.
So this is going to be a demonstration of how the CryoPop works, and it's going to be
used in much the way that the existing cryotherapy is used today in
health centers, and a patient will come in for screening and if she is detected as
having positive pre-cancerous lesions that need to be treated with cryotherapy,
then the
nurse will perform cryotherapy
very similar to the way she does today. The big differences are the
Cyropop is only going to cost about two hundred dollars and is also much more efficient
with CO2. So currently, a big fifty-pound tank only treats about
ten to fifteen patients. Here with this five pound tank, we expect that we should
be able to treat
about twenty to thirty patients so we've really expanded the portability.
So in the clinic once the nurses finds the the lesions, she will assemble the cryo-pop
which is a few components, retract the pusher up, in order to basically
create a chamber in which the dry ice will fill into
She will have the tank on a stand that holds it upside-down or she'll have a tank
with a dip tube
and, so
the two pieces get clicked together, and you hear the popping sounds so you know
you're in a good position. You turn on your tank
through the valve,
and you watch the smoke fill up
and basically once it gets above the line and starts hissing like that you know you're
full.
You then release the two pieces from each other,
and you cap the end of the dry ice in order to prevent it from falling out,
and once you have your
device in position on the surface of the *** where we need it to be
you hit the go button just like you would on a normal device, and you
perform your freeze until the dry ice runs out which is going to be about
three minutes, and you're going to watch the ice ball like you would normally, and you would basically
see when the dry ice runs out on the end of the push rod here.
So that was the demonstration, and I just want to reiterate the key points.
for the CryoPop. The first is that it's low-cost so it's going to be about tenth
of the cost of the current equipment. The second is its efficiency with CO2
so
it's about thirty times more efficient with the CO2 which really should
expand its portability quite dramatically, and finally it's also very
simple components, very durable because it's all just injection moded
components. If something does break, it's very easy to swap the pieces.
