Student: Hello Professor: Oh Hello Student: Hi
Professor: Hi, how is your lab work going? Student: Very well, thank you.
Professor: Oh its good news this seems like you are continuing your typical good work. And,
Student: I try Professor: I have noticed that you are always spending
a lot of time with students in other lab in Prenlen's Lab. What do you always do about?
Student: Um, I just try to mentor them because they're undergrads and they are coming for the summer.
I just wanted to help them and they seem really excited about doing research with the animals.
Even, some of them started naming the animals. Which is what you shouldn't do because everybody
does that at first. Professor: That sounds good that you are encouraging the career of younger students.
But, has professor Prenlen said something about you?
Student: He hasn't said anything to me, has he said anything to you about me?
Professor: Not really but I think in our department each lab is autonomous and professor Prenlen has
been known for his protective of his lab. So I think, I'm afraid that there are some
mis-perceptions I think these informal things are very important to our academic work.
Student: Well, I, I am a little bit nervous because some of his students, the summer students,
mentioned that there's guinea pigs in the lab and aren't the animals supposed to be
in the central facility? Professor: Yes
Student: Because Prenlen has guinea pigs, so I don't know if I should tell anyone, I don't want
anyone to get in trouble. Have you talked to Prenlen about it?
Professor: No, not really. Maybe I could try to help you to get in contact with Prenlen
Student: Does he have a special permission to have the guinea pigs there? I just don't want,
like, I don't want to get in trouble but I think that they're supposed to be in the central,
central area. Professor: I think
Student: Because my brother told me that at his school they found some, a lab breaking protocol and
that everybody that was doing research with animals had to do a retraining and I don't
know I don't want to, I don't want to not have said anything. So.... Is there anything,
should I just leave it alone or can we tell someone?
Professor: Yea maybe you can tell someone, in fact this experiment has been permitted, I think, in
our department lab. Student: Okay well I just wanted to bring it up just
in case, we weren't supposed to do that. I don't know.
Professor: Okay, thanks for your concern. Student: You're welcome.
