I'm standing in the empty venue of Theater Kikker in Utrecht.
At the end of November it should be packed with artists from the Netherlands and abroad,
theater makers and loads of audience.
Because then, the very first edition of What You See Festival will take place.
It's an international festival about gender, identity and yourself.
With lots of dance, theater, visual arts, parties, conversations, music, workshops.
Why an art festival on sexuality, gender and identity? Why now, still?
Because the conversation is not finished, the dialogue needs to go on.
And an art festival is a perfect place for that.
Attention for this topic is important, always and everywhere, also in this festival.
Because a lot of people do not fit the general standard.
There are many, but still, many people stick to the norm.
So, we need to push its boundaries.
I find it extremely important that everyone can be who wants to be,
regardless of who you are, where you're going and where you're going.
With What You See, we want to give a stage to that, and explore what it means.
It is very important to pay attention to the topic, and to show it.
This combination of the topic with art is beautiful
and essential for Utrecht, the Netherlands and beyond.
This festival invites everyone who loves performances,
interesting exhibitions, lively debates, encounters with other people, confusion, amazement ...
So, for everyone!
We'll show formerly unpresented work or international makers,
and new work and exciting previews or makers from Utrecht and the rest of the country.
No only in the theaters,
but also here, in the heart of the city.
It is a brand new festival, that's why we need to make a start somewhere.
We need your help. We want to make it with and for Utrecht.
To realize the very first edition of What You See Festival, we need your help.
So have a look at the site of the art to see how you can support us and what you will get in return.
And then we would like to warmly invite to this first edition,
at the end of November, here in Utrecht.
