To your health, body and spirit - Good for body and mind Women who go for a walk at least twice a week reduce their risk of heart failure by 20 percent According to a recent study, “[walking] for at least 40 minutes several times per week at an average to fast pace is associated with a near 25-percent drop in the risk of heart failure among post-menopausal women.” Dr. Somwail Rasla, a cardiologist at Saint Vincent Hospital, explained that while it has already been en established that physical activity can lower the risk of heart failure, it’s possible that –contrary to popular belief – walking alone may be enough. In the U.S., at least 6.5 million adults have heart failure, a condition where the heart is too weak to pump enough blood for the body’s needs. The risk of heart failure increases with age, and women who are 75 to 84 years old are at least thrice as likely to have heart failure, unlike women who are 65 to 74 years old.
