Hi. I'm Jen from Clay Cafe and on behalf of Expert Village I'll be showing you how to
take your ceramic piece from start to finish. In this clip I'd like to introduce you to
what glazes actually out there that you can paint your piece with. First off the most
common are under glazes that come in an absolute rainbow of colors. And generally area applied
with a 3 coat rule. The 3 coats is basically just to ensure that you get a nice even coverage.
And on tiles behind me you can see that we've broken it up in to a 1st, 2nd and 3rd coat.
The first coat is generally a very light, very translucent coverage where you can see
all of your brush strokes. The second coat will give you a little bit more coverage even
though you'll still be able to see a couple of brush strokes. Your third coat is sort
of the golden coat and will give you completely solid coverage. So the special glazes you
can work with, like these ones I have on the wall, include paints like your burst, your
pottery and your courtyard. Your burst paints are really, really popular and their mostly
used for doing large areas and covering most inside and outside of pieces. Your pottery
glazes are a more traditional glaze that really looks like the more traditional pottery that
you see. The courtyard glazes are used mainly for decorative items. Even though they are
food safe, so you can use them on any piece. Courtyards are really, really neat because
they actually have 2 different functions. You can create a courtyard that has a nice
matte finish and sort of grainy. But you can also use it as a shiny, really glassy look
to your piece.
