Hello. I’m Andres Alcantar, Chairman of the Texas Workforce Commission. Businesses
are showing confidence in the positive economic climate of Texas, expanding their payrolls
by 80,600 jobs in February. Over the year we’ve seen almost 360,000 jobs added. The
state’s economy has grown by 3.3 percent over the year, with every major industry showing
positive growth. The unemployment rate in Texas was 6.4 percent in February, as the
state’s Civilian Labor Force continued to rise. It remained well below the national
unemployment rate of 7.7 percent. Professional and Business Services led the way in February,
with employers adding 25,400 positions. The industry has grown by 4.8 percent over the
year, adding 66,000 jobs. Economic drivers such as Construction, and Mining & Logging,
are growing in Texas. Construction has added over 43,000 jobs over the year, while Mining
and Logging has added nearly 20,000. Both of these industries have grown by 7.5 percent
over the year. Service Providing industries in Texas grew by 3.2 percent over the year,
adding 286,300 jobs. Over 347,000 private-sector jobs have been added in Texas for 3.9 percent
growth rate over the year, compared to the national private-sector growth rate of 1.9
