In 2010 there were 113,000 women in jail or prison.
And that rate doubled over men.
In 2009 Cat from Conspire Theater approached me about doing theater in our
jail for women who are incarcerated.
I think being able to use a creative outlet for women when they're locked up
gives them a way to
express themselves differently
It kind of stirs you up and gets you started and makes you smile and
yeah I think is really really needed.
We're interested in all women who have had experiences of incarceration but particularly
women really interested in
making some kind of big shift in their lives
and they want some community support around them.
This is going to be
the first thing I've ever done outside of doing drugs and being on the street.
I'm really interested in mind-body connection an how
laughter and joy and play can be a way to start healing from trauma.
they have voices they have beautiful
resonant, amazing voices, I have not given them anything.
I think all we're doing is providing a platform
and a megaphone for them to amplify their voices.
I've learned to tell my story every time I tell it
loses its power in the sense where I'm not in bondage by it.
