What I usually will try to do is set career goals. And talk about career, even as a freshman
coming in. I don't necessarily talk about major requirements, we talk about what you
want to do after you graduate. And I'll say it's kind of like making sure you're on the right
path.
I think part of it is really to talk with a student about not even their career plans, but what
are their life goals and their beliefs. Because I think sometimes their career goals might
not necessarily align with what makes them happy. Again, we tend to work with a lot of
first-generation college students, so all they know is certain careers,
and sometimes it's family pressure. So, sometimes students go into these careers and after a
while you realize that's not what's making them happy.
Asking the questions, to get to why they're in school. And so beginning a conversation with
"why are you here? what brought you to college, and what do you hope to get out of it?"
I think ultimately, knowing a student's end goal is going to help me help them in creating
a path to help them get to that end goal.
