Can't wait to play
and we've got Lynyrd Skynyrd playing come on!
Molly Hatchet, Hank3
I heard a bunch of people singing "Hey macarena"
We hoped to have had it recorded before this tour
-And are there any suprises, or is it just another Obituary album?
-Right now we're still working on a lot of the ideas
-So, you're doing Hellfest tonight What are the plans for the future, after this?
-So, what is the situation with the second guitar player?
-I heard a bit of nagging on the internet, that there aren't enough solos anymore
-If all you care about is solos, you got to go see Yngwie Malmsteen
Obituary is about the music and the vocals and the brutalness
-That was great, it's a beautiful place we had a really good time there
-It must had been very good
-Well the PA system in that house that night, was amazing
I mean, there was so much bottom end, I mean it hurt my ears while we were playing
-Excellent!
"Show me your ***"
-Hey this is Nick Azinas from Peek from the Pit and I'm here with the guys from Betraying the Martyrs
How are you doing guys? - It's going very well!
-It's going super, and you? -Very well! So, a beautiful Hellfest
With a great weather, first day was very rainy yesterday was very nice and so is today
So you played on the first day on the mainstage. How was it?
Really well, it was a honour for us to be the first on the mainstage
It's a childhood dream that became a reality
We obviously were a bit scared when we arrived
Because playing at 10:30am as the opening for a festival is not easy
Will the crowd be awake and will they be here?
And when you see the stage and get on this huge stage
The biggest we've ever played and you see in front of you the empty grass
It scares you a little bit
But really, as soon as the first notes sounded we were all in it
The reaction from the crowd was superb, while the previous day
we setted as an objective to really create an atmosphere
To move the people, to make a wall of death at 11 am, will we make it?
And we did, so we're all very happy!
-Same? It must have been pretty scary to see such a huge stage, no?
-Already when we arrived on Thursday we saw the tents and it looked impressive
And yeah when you arrive, you check in you get your passes and there is the stage
It's huge and far away. We couldn't even see our sound engineer on the tower opposite the stage
"Hello Theo(the sound engineer)"
Indeed we were very worried but like Luka said as soon as we started playing
The "machine" started working and we did what we always do only that this time
We had much more space and we really enjoyed it because we really like
To move on stage and sometimes we don't really have the occasion to do so with smaller stages
but this time we could run all over and move at free-will, we really had a great time playing
-So big stages are way better then? -If I could do it everyday, I would!
-Excellent! So, Betraying the Martyrs, the new album will be out beginning of 2013
How is it going to be? What do you want to do with it?
-At the moment we are still composing so, we don't really know where we're going to take it
since we don't have the songs or the arrangements yet so for the moment
let's say that we keep the codes of BTM, somekind of symphonic deathcore
with many variations. I think that our style feeds on many things
because we are a combination of 6 different personalities with different tastes
and different experiences
and I think that on the next album the main influence will be all the experiences
that we had this year while touring with all the bands that we've been
and I think that each band brought us something and we feed on that
in order to play our music while bringing something new
-And in addition, you have two massive tours which are happening soon. Notably the Mayhem Fest
So, what do you expect from this tour?
-What we expect is to meet many people since these are immense tours in the US
I think the only things which are bigger are the Ozzfest and the Warped tour
But Mayhem in July, which has as headliners Slayer, Motorhead, Slipknot and Anthrax
and then a stage with "smaller" bands As I Lay Dying, Devil Wears Prada and Whitechapel
and even if we are displayed with small fonts on the posters, the fact that we are between
these bands which shaped our childhood, even if we all have different personalities
and took different musical paths these are some commun things that we share
We all loved Slayer at some point as well as Slipknot so being between them
and thinking to ourselves that anyway every night we'll be able to watch
Slipknot and Slayer, it's going to be a dream, so really we hope to learn
from this tour since we've never done anything as big and the same for the
All-Stars which is in August and is a slightly smaller tour since there is no
massive headliner such as a band from the Big 4, but it is still a very big tour
with Suicide Silence and Dance Gavin Dance and all the pictures from the tour that we've seen
are in some street with a huge crowd, and finding ourselves in there
will be an different experince than Mayhem but we're here to learn
and we hope that thanks to that we will help people to discover our music
because I think that when you go to these festivals you don't go to see Betraying
You're going so that you can see Slipknot and Slayer
and while you're there you might go "Hey there is a band over there let's check it out"
What we hope really is to attract the attention of these people
Give them a good time and to promote the band and play in front of as many people
as possible that don't know us and try to give them a good memory from our show
so that they'll remember Betraying the Martyrs in a good way.
-So, let's talk a bit about Hellfest. What bands did you see since you've been here?
-Well during the first day we unfortunately didn't see much since we had interviews
all day long.
Eitherwise we saw Lynyrd Skynyrd which was really cool
Megadeth, I was a bit disapointed personally -Same here.
-Before joining Betraying I was in a band with the guitar player from Betraying
which was called Black Curtains, as a reference to the Megadeth song
so basicaly I'm a big fan but I was disapointed, it was kind of soft
and after that there was Amon Amarth which I stupidly missed, since I heard it was amazing
I'm really disapointed I missed it
-King Diamond on the next stage? -Well King Diamond, musically it's not
really my cup of tea but visually it was incredible with the staircase and all
Really cool!
And yesterday, we first watched our friends from As They Burn
Which are really good friends with us, they're from Paris as well and they ripped the
Warzone apart, it was filled with people, it was really good
And then we watched Emmure with whom we go to Spain with after tomorrow
and as usual they were really good and they had one of the best live sounds I've heard
Really impressive
Afterwards there was Machine Head which were really cool
I'm a big Machine Head fan, it was really nice
I saw a bit of the Guns as well, which was funny
and Behemoth which I have been looking forward to and didn't disapoint!
It was really opressive
-And talking of Guns and Roses, the big surprise was that Axl came on stage on time!
That was really the big thing with Hellfest, as soon as Machine Head finished
which by the way were huge, two minutes later Guns and Roses kicked off
I mean it's really incredible, no?
-I think what happened is that on the rider they told them they were playing at 10pm
and that's why they were on time!
-I thought of the exact same thing! They just told them yeap you're playing earlier and they were on time!
So that was excellent, eitherwise apparently for Machine Head you were in the first rows
How did it go? -It was extremely violent
My whole body is in pain
I had already seen Machine Head live and they seemed a bit tired this time
but they're still charisma monsters. Rob Flynn can stay silent for 20 seconds
he's just looking around and everybody goes "AAAAAAA"
really they're monsters, as simple as that! Musically it was perfect
The sound was great and the ambience in the pit was, I've rarely hurt myself so much
It was really incredible and energetic. The gig hadn't even started and I was receiving surfers on my head
I really enjoyed it a lot!
- I have the impression that there were more people for Machine Head than for Guns
I don't know if you agree
-I saw this too but I think it's because the people were just tired after Machine Head and many
also maybe thought that they would had had time to rest after in order
to watch Guns knowing that they'll be an hour and half late
Myself I was ready to go and rest and then eventually I couldn't take any more
Machine Head killed everybody so I think there were less people for Guns
-And I think Behemoth played a role as well, no? I mean the Behemoth tent was full
I went there, I watched a song -It was packed. We really had a hard time
to see what was going on, there were almost too many people
-Yeah, I saw one song and then I thought that there were too many people, it's impossible
to go forward so I went and saw Guns. On the other hand, Hellfest is an extreme festival
there's loads of people that come especially for this, for black metal.
-Well today there is a very nice line up on the Temple or the Altar stage
with Ihsahn, Arcturus and Dimmu Borgir I think on a black metal level, on a creative
black metal level, which I like, its not like Dark Throne or Burzum
I think you can hardly have a better line up than this
It is really something I'm looking forward to. For me this Hellfest has a great extreme metal
line up, with some bands that it's hard to see live liek Dimmu Borgir who don't tour
that much, Ihsahn and Arcturus, I don't even know if they ever played France before
so I really don't want to miss that and I'm really looking forward to it
-It is going to be interesting though, Arcturus and then Dimmu, do you think there will be
something with Vortex?
-Considering that it seems that they parted ways in a bad way
the bass player of Arcturus is the ex-Dimmu bass player. I don't know.
Last night Guns started with a fake Slash everybody was like "Wow, Slash is here"
Well no, so I'm not creating any illusions to myself
I think that Vortex won't do anything with Dimmu, it would had been great if he did
but I think they will try to avoid each other in the backstage and all will be good
-So, now you guys have the two US tours are there any more plans for the future?
-Well, I think we can say it now, we have been confirmed to play Graspop next weekend
Which is really cool and after this summer we're going to tour France
because we have to since we don't do enough dates in France
We will have had integrated the US market well enough
And we did two European tours this year as well
So in between September and December, I don't know in which order, but
We're going to work on the new album and record it, tour in France
and we are also planning, it's not certain yet, but we might visit some other continents too
-Well, thank you very much guys for the chat and have a good Hellfest
and good luck with the tours!
