As of August 1, JMU Computing has chosen the SSLVPN to replace the CISCO VPN software for
off campus connections. The SSLVPN will work for both PC and Mac computers. Here is a quick
guide on how to setup and use the SSLVPN.
With SSLVPN, there are a few options on how to connect to resources like the library databases.
For the best method, you need to install the Network Connect local software to your machine.
This will be a one-time installation. So, let’s begin.
Step 1: Open a browser and go to sslvpn.jmu.edu
Step 2: Enter your JMU eID and password to sign in
to the SSLVPN
Step 3: Click the Start button next to Network Connect
Step 4: You will receive a warning message that “an
applet from “sslvpn.jmu.edu” is requesting access to your computer. You will want to
allow this software to be installed to your local machine. This message will continue
to appear everytime you launch Network Connect, so you may consider checking the Allow all
applets from “sslvpn.jmu.edu” with this signature to not have to approve the request
every time you connect.
Step 5: After Network Connect finishes downloading,
you will see a local client appear in the bottom right-hand corner noting details such
as your assigned IP address, how much information you have sent and received, and how long you
have been connected. You will also see that Network Connect has a default home browser
button that will allow you to open a new page with the connection. The default browser on
Mac computers is Safari, even if you started using the connection with Mozilla Firefox
or Google Chrome.
When you are done researching, there are 2 ways to disconnect.
Method 1: Use the Sign Out button at the top right corner of your web browser. The Sign
Out button looks like a brown door. If you just close your browser, you will still be
connected.
Method 2: In the Network Connect application, click the Sign Out button in the right corner.
For your own safety, you want to make sure you disconnect correctly. Also, the SSLVPN
will not allow you to have more than one connection open at a time. If you do not exit the SSLVPN
correctly, you will encounter this error message forcing you to disconnect the previous session.
