… Ah, I was the beginning, I was The One
In Newfoundland's history who
started the revival of Newfoundland ballads.
And, ah. But anyway.
But I was so proud I,
I Revived the Star of Logy Bay and, and
The Squid Jigging Ground, and
We'll Rant and We'll Roar,
And there we're a few others.
… Oh yes, ah, the funny thing is,
I've often thought
It wasn't a very successful venture.
Indeed I am
In love with you
I'm out all night
In the foggy dew
Indeed I am, in love with you
Mussels in the corner
Mussels in the sea
… Ah, oh yes, ah, ah, with the
The one thing, the first thing,
The important thing to be said
In connection with the resettlement,
The relocation, the centralization policy
Is, ah, the very opposite of what
It was intended to be;
A way to provide a better,
A way of earning a living
In the places where people moved to,
Ah, as against the places they moved from.
Now that is utterly false.
Indeed I am, in love with you
Out all night in the foggy dew
Indeed I am in love with you
Mussels in the corner
Mussels in the sea
There's no truth whatsoever in that
That never did at any time
Form part of the reasoning or the, ah,
The justification
Never, in any way, or in any degree an explanation
of the policy.
The policy, ah, was one,
So far as the government was concerned,
Was one of helping the people of any settlement
Who wished to move,
And showed it, and proved it
And proved it unmistakably,
Proving that they wanted to move
...I didn't cheer, nobody cheered
It was too deeply impressive,
You just stood there and you watched,
And you marvelled, at it.
Indeed I am in love with you
Out all night in the foggy dew
Indeed I am in love with you
Mussels in the corner
Mussels in the sea
The real reason why
The Newfoundland government
Originated it's own policy,
Not the policy of moving,
Because for hundreds of years people had moved;
People had moved from the north side of the harbour to the south side,
They moved from an island into the main,
They moved from one settlement to another settlement;
This had been going on for hundreds of years,
So the government didn't originate the policy of resettlement,
Or relocation.
The government's policy was one of helping,
And the reason for it was this...
Quite simply,
We didn't want to see
Thirty forty fifty sixty seventy eighty thousand,
A hundred thousand Newfoundland youngsters,
Raised in ignorance.
...The time came when we just
Failed...
