Hi, my name is Michelle O’Dierno. I’m the woman’s health nurse practitioner at UB student health services.
A GYN exam is an important part of healthcare for women. All sexually active women should have their first GYN exam at age 21 whether your partner is male, female, or both.
A woman should be seen sooner if she has a problem or concern. Women who have never had sex but have concerns, can also be examined without affecting their virginity.
Everything discussed at your visit is completely confidential. It’s an opportunity for a medical provider to review your medical, ***, and menstrual history.
The questions asked at your GYN exam are often very personal and sensitive, and may seem silly or embarrassing, but they are very important in helping the healthcare provider
obtain an accurate assessment of your overall health and any problems you may be at risk for.
