A few years ago,
I was about 43 years old.
That is about the age for being confused.
I was born in China in a city called the Xi'an.
The Chinese are suspicious of being religious.
We are taught that this is a material life.
There is no God or spirit—
only material, physical life.
In 1994 my son was born.
That made me want to work hard
to give him a better future.
When you are in the workplace
and you spend long hours, you can get bad habits.
I started to bring them home.
My wife and I talked less.
We quarreled more often.
I was struggling to find a vision for myself,
a vision for my wife and son.
I'm so grateful I can be called a Mormon.
The Church has helped me understand what love is,
what respect is,
and the most important thing,
what the meaning of life is.
People ask my son,
"What happened to your family after you were baptized?"
He tells them that
my wife and I are more loving than before.
My name is John Chen.
I live in Boston.
I work at Harvard University.
I am my children's father,
my wife's husband,
and
I am a Mormon.
