Did you know that with your library card you are not limited to searching and
taking out things just your home library? That is right! With your library card you
have the contents of 66 libraries in the Mid-Hudson region at your fingertips! That adds up to
millions of options! All you need is a computer or mobile device with internet access. This
tutorial will show you: How to reserve an item at your library so no one else can grab
it before you get there. How to put yourself on a waiting list if there are a bunch of
people who want the same item as you do. And show you how to have items delivered from
one library to another so you can pick your order up where it is most convenient for you.
All by using your library's online catalog. Let's say we are interested in finding out more
about the Hudson Valley and wanted to know what was available from the library. To search
we will go to our library's online catalog. We will type Hudson Valley into the search
box and click submit. From our search results page we see that there are quite a few results
802 in fact! This book looks interesting AMC's Best Day Hikes in the Catskills and Hudson
Valley. To see more information about the contents and which libraries own the book,
we will click on the title. It's a link. If the book is checked in at my home library
I can request it through the online catalog and it will be held for me. But what if the
book you want is not at your home library or it is checked out and there are a bunch
of other people who want it too? Never fear you can still get it. You can request it from
here and the first available copy will be shipped to your library. Way easier than traveling
across the county to the owning library, huh? Either way, reserving the book is the same
So let's get requesting! To request the book AMC's Best Day Hikes in the Catskills and
Hudson Valley we'll click REQUEST . Then enter your library card number and PIN on the log-in
page-
and click submit. Now we need to select the library where we want to pick up the book.
And I will pick my home library of New Lebanon. Unless you have a definite deadline after
which you don't want your book just leave the cancel if not filled by fields and hit
submit. This page should pop up telling you if your request was successful. The library
you selected as the pick-up location should notify you when your book is ready to be picked
up, and just note that your library will hold your requests for a set period of time.
Now, once you place a successful request you can check its status, change the pick-up location,
or cancel it, by checking My Account in your library's catalog. But that's another story
for another session!
