Katadyn 8017764 Mini Hey everyone, Aquaman here with FilterDoctor.com.
Today we’re looking at the Katadyn 8017764. This is the Mini, an easy to use filter pump
that has definitely earned its’ name, because it is the smallest filter pump of this type
on the market today. It features a silver impregnated, 0.2 micron
ceramic filter element. The silver impregnating makes the filter bacteriostatic so that microorganisms
cannot live and grow on it, and the 0.2 micron porosity has the passed the EPA testing standard
for microbiological water purification; which means you can count on the Mini to remove
99.99% of microbial cysts like cryptosporidium and giardia, and the same level of protection
for protozoa and pathogenic bacteria like salmonella, e coli, and cholera.
The Mini can produce about a half quart of water per minute with the pumping mechanism,
and weighs a mere eight ounces. But perhaps the greatest feature of the Mini
is the highly reusable ceramic filter element. Simply remove it like I just did; and then
take the provided green Scotchbrite and under running water scrub the outer surface, reinstall,
and you’re back in business. Now, at some point after you’ve been using
the filter for a while you are going to need to measure the ceramic filter element to see
if it is a viable thickness to continue to be reused.
Katadyn has provided a tool, and they’ve built it right into the top of the mini. It
pops out right here on top, and the idea here is that you’re measuring the diameter of
the ceramic filter element. Right now the element is new and the tool will not go all
the way over the element. Over time the element will wear thin, and when you can get the gauge
to go over the filter, then it has worn too thin and needs to be replaced. Simply put
that back in the top and reinstall the ceramic filter element.
Now, the Mini comes with everything you see here. It’s very compact; the source water
line is permanently connected and can be coiled up and stuffed into the underside of the Mini
itself. Then, of course, they’ve provided an outlet water line and a float that you
can put on the end of your source water to keep it floating so that it doesn’t go all
the way to the bottom and suck muck and crud off the bottom of a pond, for example. And
then, of course, Katadyn has provided this food grade silicone grease to lubricate the
O-rings and the piston on your filter pump. And everything fits neatly in this handy carrying
pack. Stuff it all in here, chuck it in your backpack and no matter where you go you can
count on having safe drinking water. Again, this is the Katadyn 8017764, the Mini,
and I’m your host Aquaman with FilterDoctor.com. Thanks for watching.
