This is the National Weather Service in Elko here to bring you a weather brief for the
upcoming winter storm set to impact the area by as early as late Christmas afternoon in
Humboldt County, spreading modest snow fall amounts across all of northern Nevada and
lasting through Thursday. This briefing may be updated later in time, but will depend
upon staffing and work requirements here at the National Weather Service in Elko.
The latest satellite image shows a large area of low pressure off the western coast of British
Columbia, Canada at this time. This storm is forecast to push east and south, moving
into the northern Great Basin by early Wednesday. It is expected to bring various amounts of
accumulating snow across all the areas of northern Nevada.
Winter weather advisories and a winter storm warning have already been issued for much
of northern Nevada through Thursday. These headlines will go into effect starting late
Tuesday. Travel is expected to be hazardous over all of northern Nevada Wednesday and
Thursday due to limited visibilities and snow covered roads creating slippery conditions.
Unsettled weather will continue into late Christmas Day through Thursday, creating large
travel impacts across the Great Basin due to snow. Travel impacts will begin by Christmas
night over Humboldt and Elko Counties, before pushing southward Wednesday and Thursday.
At this time the biggest impacts across Northern and Central Nevada are expected Wednesday
and Thursday. The above graphic depicts when hazardous travel
could be possible due to snow for the mid-week travel period. Impacts will spread west to
east over the period, beginning by late Tuesday afternoon and night across Humboldt and Northern
Elko Counties, before spreading into all of northern Nevada by early Wednesday morning.
The largest impacts to travel across Northern and Central Nevada are expected to be Wednesday
and Thursday. The heaviest snow is expected to start in
the Humboldt, Northern Lander/Eureka, and Elko Counties Christmas night into Wednesday.
The band of accumulating snow will move southward and hit Southern Lander/Eureka, White Pine,
and Northern Nye Counties Wednesday night into Thursday. Roads could become hazardous
due to slippery conditions caused by snow and slush.
