We're here today in Degem in Ethiopia
and what you see around me is a model household.
Now, the idea of this household
is that it provides an example to all the households around
about ways in which you can live in a healthy and clean way -
separating the animals from the house,
making sure that the grain stores are kept above the ground,
seeing recycling of liquid waste.
And the idea is that this is managed by a local health post.
That health post will have five model households underneath it.
And then, in turn, there's a health centre,
which has five health posts underneath that.
This is all part of...an effort on the part of
the Ministry of Health here in Ethiopia
to promulgate healthy living, preventing disease.
And the Australia Government is contributing $45 million
to the Ethiopian Ministry of Health over a four-year period.
It's our single largest aid contribution in Africa
and it's achieving incredible results.
We've seen a reduction in child mortality of 30%
in the last five years.
That is a revolution
in terms of the way in which life is lived here in Ethiopia
and the health standards here in Ethiopia.
And I've got to say,
it gives me an enormous sense of pride
to be here representing the Australian Government
and seeing this operate in action.
