iridioPatents is an information retrieval system for patents and patent applications
It offers advanced search, analysis and report generation of patents
Currently the system offers access to several sources of patents:
WIPO, USPTO, EPO and BOPI
Information can be accessed in two ways:
Technological Watch: the user receives notifications on a daily basis about the new patents over the defined interests.
Metasearch: at any point user queries are launched against the sources of patents.
In this video, we will show several functionalities of iridioPatents
They will be illustrated by a real case of patents study, regarding patents from Motorola and Apple
We begin by launching a metasearch to obtain Apple patents on mobile devices
Metasearch will be stored in the selected projects with the designated name
The status of the launched metasearch can be consulted in the list of user's metasearches
Status is also reflected in the home page of the user
Next, we create a new query by reformulating the existing one to obtain Motorola patents
We will now inspect the ranked list of patents result of one of the metasearches
Results can be sorted by different criteria
In the results ranking relevant information about the patents is showed like applicants or IPC
For each patent detailed data is offered
Next, we will move to the projects interface to exploit the retrieved information
Projects are stored in a hierarchical structure
Using the buttons on the top, the projects can be managed
Also, a user can share a project with other users
We will now build a report to exploit the information of "Smartphone" project that we previously created.
Reports contain a title and editable sections which can be added, removed or reordered
First, we will add two charts: Motorola IPCs distribution and Apple IPCs distribution
We can set a threshold of minimum number of patents to shown an element.
There are several variables to build the diagrams
We select "Applicant" to edit the contents of the diagram
Portions of the diagram are selected/deselected by mouse clicks
With the selected values, we can apply different operations. We will keep Motorola patents only
Next, we change the variable. The previous selection is kept, so we are only processing Motorola patents
There are several types of charts; we choose bar diagram to show IPC distribution
Once we have the desired diagram, we add it to our section
Next, we will repeat these steps to build the diagram for Apple
Next we will build a stacked-bar diagram
In this diagram, we will see which is the relation between countries and IPC for Motorola and Apple patents
From the result, we reflect our conclussions in the report
Now we will study the inventors distribution of both companies
Next, we are going to launch the information requests against the technological watch platform
This platform keeps in local storage all of the information recently published by the patents offices.
The information is accessed through searches, in the same unified access form as in the metasearch platform
In fact, we can reformulate the metasearch query to launch it as a technological watch query
Results from technological watch can be stored as metasearches, so they can be exploited in the projects, and as information interests so they are updated daily.
Now, we will keep in the project the metasearches derived from technological watch.
And insert new contents in the report with the fresh information
We add a new section about recent trends
We will add a chart for Motorola inventors and a chart for Apple inventors
Associated to each chart we will add information about the related patents through the "autotext" tool
With the autotext tool we can choose the number of patents, the number of words per field, and the fields we want to show
Next, we will do the same with Apple recent patents
Finally, we can download the report in editable format or PDF format (just to print or show)
iridioPatents offers several other functionalities:
RSS subscription to technological watches, sharing of projects between users, etc
