Now there are a few different rolls that are played and notated on the snare drum. One
being the open stroke roll and then there is the buzz roll. Now this is a little bit
different on the marching snare drum opposed to the concert snare drum. Concert settings
you are going to hear a lot more buzz rolls than necessarily open stroke rolls. In a marching
setting, you usually play quite a few of both. When you see in the music I've written out
what will be an open stroke roll. So if you see th is notated in your music with 3 line,
that indicates 30 second notes. So really it is called a roll but it is really a rhythm
and there should be 32 of them within a 4/4 bar. So for a buzz roll you are going to see
a Z on the note like that and for the buzz roll the sticks are a lot more closed down
and you get that nice buzz sound.
