bjbjU Stop 294 Family tour St Peters Micro Mosaic Final David: re probably wondering
what we re doing with an oil painting in a glass museum. Well, it s made of glass. Step
really close, and you ll see that it s not painted at all. (sfx: crowd noise, horses
whinnying, fountain splashing) It s a mosaic. Tiny glass tiles that have been fitted together
to produce this crowd scene of people in the square, outside St. Peter s in Rome, watching
and listening to the Pope give a blessing. Narrator: Can you see him? There s a lot going
on here, so I ll point you in the right direction. Look at the big building in the background.
Now peek between the columns and find the balcony with the red curtains. That little
white dot on the balcony is the Pope! Kid 1: How did they get all the different colors
of the sky? David: The individual tiles are very, very carefully selected. The mosaic
workshop would have a stockpile of literally hundreds and hundreds of different colors.
Not just red and blue, but twenty different shades of red, and twenty different shades
of blue. Kid 2: I can hardly keep my room organized. I wouldn t want the job of keeping
track of all those little pieces of glass! How do they get them to stay on? David: They
re held in place with an adhesive, and after that, there is no firing, there is no melting
together of the tiles. The picture has been literally put together from all of those thousands
of tiny pieces (of glass of different colors.) Narrator: If you want to see just what goes
into a making a micro-mosaic, look through the magnifying lens and see if you notice
the lines where the pieces of glass join together. St Peters Micromosaic David Family 042 Cont.
