So our freshman class at GCL,
we spent the whole year in the community of Woodlawn.
So we spent the first semester really studying the community, and then
this semester we all chose an area of interest, and I chose
the YWCA Family Resource Center, and just really focused on
the homework clinic. Myself along with the two of my classmates, we went over there
two days a week and so we each had two students we worked with,
so a total of six students, and we really just spent some one-on-one time with them,
building relationships.
They all came in very negative and defeated over math, and so we
really got the opportunity to see them
overcome that. Just really teaching them that they can succeed when they do put forth that effort.
And in our mind that's the
long-term impact that we're going to make.
To take the knowledge we had and to put it on someone else's level and
communicate that effectively.
That's just a life skill that
is so valuable for all of us. And so that's something we're really thankful to have had.
You know we aren't going to be there for the next eight years of their academic career,
but we can teach them that when they put in the work
they can see big results.
We fortunately were able to see grades
improve consistently one letter grade but oftentimes two
through the time we spent with them, so
that was just a huge blessing and we're really just
thankful for the time we had with them.
