"Mammal Collection" "Loan Prep"
Behind the scenes of the University of Colorado Museum of Natural History lies a rich collection
of specimens carefully preserved and tucked away inside cabinets. This collection ranges
from mammals, to birds, to reptiles, and more. We have specimens that are already 150 years
old! It is our job to keep them safe and preserved so that students and researchers can study
them for generations to come.
-My name is Emily Braker and I'm the Collection Manager of vertebrates here at CU. We have
about 130,000 preserved vertebrates; we have representation in over 100 countries; they
are the largest collections of their kind in the state of Colorado. So we're asking for
funding to buy new cabinetry in order to preserve our collections into the future.
- I'm Dr. Christy McCain, I am the Curator of Vertebrates here in the Natural History
Museum. You know, with bad cabinetry, it's a risk that we take. In our worst case scenario,
if we had an infestation, we could lose our specimens in a year.
- Our current cabinetry is over 50 years old. They're not able to hold our heaviest specimens;
the drawers have absorbed a lot of the historic chemicals like arsenic and moth balls, which
are very toxic for us staff to be around.
Even Cecil, the Museum's favorite grump, could use some better cabinets to live in!
A donation to this Museum will help upgrade the facilities that preserve these amazing
mammals, and will allow us to continue
inspiring, researching, and educating.
Be Boulder.
