So things have changed in which way...
Here it says 850 operated patients, at the moment there are more
than 20.000 so the numbers have changed
we have already gained a very important experience and in our country
besides another medical center where they work hard too,
in ours they have operated more than 20.000 patients.
In the educational area there are more than 240 graduates from our foundation.
From Mexico and below there is no country
without a graduate from our foundation.
I could give you some examples, the chief of cardiovascular surgery
from Mexico’s institute of cardiology,
-which was the world’s first institute,
it was founded by Dr Chavez back in the 40’s-
is one of our collaborators from the young men who came here to learn.
Today he is in the chief position.
In Ecuador, there was no cardiovascular surgery,
only rich people could go elsewhere to get operated
wherever they wanted because they had the money.
The rest would die, or I don’t know.
There are now 2 cardiovascular surgery services
totally trained in our country.
Therefore, in the education area we have done something very important,
I didn’t do it on my own, we did it in a human group,
The individual thing doesn’t exist but the collective work does
and in the area of investigation, well a whole institute
has been developed and it has also an important projection.
There are 17 investigators who work full time,
there are a number of people who help us
and work respecting the animals to begin with
in everything related to chronic research
and it is already connected with many centers in the world,
to France, and in the United States
with 5 or 6 universities, so I feel very satisfied with what
has been achieved because in the assistance area
we have tried to cover the whole spectrum,
but we need to intensify the work to assist poor people
and for those who do not have health insurance
that is why we are founding that institute of surgery and cardiology,
let’s say of high level, with high technology
but for everybody, and essentially for the poor
who are wrongly referred to as “indigent”, I always say that.
The work will be finalized -god willing- in 2 to 3 months.
It is work done by the community, for the community,
with no owner and nonprofit
Now every time I have to explain this in Argentina
saying work done by the community, for the community,
with no owner and nonprofit you say how come?
it is very simple, it is what they call nonprofit in United States,
it means there is a group of physicians and people who manage it
by the end of the year nobody can say I have stocks, things,
and it is totally provided that way,
for the community including the 3 things we spoke about before
Education, research and assistance, connected once again
with very important medical centers in the world.
At the moment the first executive council has started to work
choosing Argentinean personalities of cardiology,
very important people who were selected perhaps for their ethical condition
more than for their condition as specialty physicians.
The foundational group is selecting the personnel,
because it is very easy to construct a building, you know
the company contracts, they do it and that’s it.
It is very easy to get the technology,
the one who knows chooses it, it is on the market
the hardest part is to fill out the space of brains
and we expect that it is not only people from our foundation,
The least are going to be from our foundation
most will be the best of the best of cardiology
and cardiovascular surgery of Argentina and maybe of Latin America
to essentially provide it that way to Latin America
but to be interconnected with the world, because today
with the satellites and with all of the things available,
we cannot justify to continue working isolated anymore.
So we already have connections, I insist
for the area of research with very important centers
but on the area of assistance we are programming a satellite system
with the most important centers, I insist
to make an exchange at every level, from the chiefs to the residents
but also to exchange knowledge in joint development programs,
and when there are patients with complicated cases
they will be able to consult
so that is the big ambition I have always had
so god willing, well destiny decides...
in a few months it will be completed and in 2 or 3 years
I will close the circle of my activity
so I thank you for bringing up these memories
because that is the initial part
which was difficult but the final part
continues to be to be very difficult
In any event, it is not that it surprises us but
but it pleasantly surprises us and it flatters us, listening to you
through what we mean in this aspects which are practically
unknown when it comes to communication
and to the common people
who are in the everyday facts which are not what one would expect,
but we never have the incentive of these words and of everything
you just mentioned to us at the beginning of this meeting
which mean a shoot for hope so important for our expectations,
our hopes, to believing in being Argentinean,
in the possibilities and in that dream of yours,
in this reality of yours today, because you also proposed
I do not remember if it was during that time or a little later,
the importance of transportation,
for example to transfer a patient from Jujuy to Capital Federal
with no possibility of being assisted in Jujuy or to transfer
family members and loved ones to Buenos Aires
to feel accompanied
during the post operation which is just as important
as the performance of the surgery in itself.
That is why I also want to say, we have spoken of
Latin America but here in our country there has been
development in Capital Federal,in Gran Buenos Aires
but also in the interior (provinces),
I would say Rosario, in Cordoba, in Mendoza, in Tucuman,
in many places medical centers have been
developing which we have always supported.
Our service has always been an open service,
which means for doctors, for technicians, for nursing, for anything.
Here whoever needs help comes here, if somebody wants to learn,
they can learn and go, and we have given all the support,
we have traveled sometimes during the weekends
to help the new guys who came from our place, and also
others who did not come out from our place as well
to give them all the support and to work for example on a Friday,
Saturday and sometimes a Sunday morning
and in that way to try to shape that
and today there are centers in the interior that work correctly
which mean that when we started this institute
it is going to be dedicated I insist to the attention of poor people
but above all things with a duty of medical research of high level
with a whole trained personnel.
Today medical research is not easy to do
but that doesn’t mean that it is excluding
but I would like it to be the main center and then
many satellite places, as they exist
and then expanding them inside our country.
The idea is broad,
very far from all that selfishness that sometimes is seen
in our profession,
specially when it comes to surgery, my generation
was educated with all the influence
from the French or German school, "le patron" right?
Le patron (The boss in French)
The great surgeon up above here surrounded by slaves,
the only thing the surgeon hoped was for them to die,
what if one of them excelled him?
It is not that way, it must not be that way,
one tries to educate people. I feel proud of my collaborators.
when I have a foreigner visitor here I tell them
don’t come here for me only,
go to room 3 or room 4 as “John Doe and Jane Doe”
are operating and you will see how good they do it.
I mean I feel proud
and what the true educator should expect is that the disciple,
-and I never talk about disciples- I talk about collaborators, excels him.
If the educator does not expect that, he is totally wrong,
and the surgeon who wants to step on their toes just so they don't grow is doubly wrong.
What he should do is to try to push him ahead, tell them to travel abroad,
to go to meetings,to the congresses,
to motivate them to educate themselves in every way
and push them every day to be better. I said this the other day.
Many times I put myself on the other side of the table,
I did it today, I mean as the helper controlling the smallest details
of what is being done and to say: that is correct,
that is wrong, that can be improved,
don’t make a mistake on this.
The work of the professor is the most beautiful thing.
Live?
Oh yeah logically, it comes a time when you have to allow
the young people to start operating,
they start will the small simple cases
and the end up with the most complicated ones,
otherwise I wouldn’t have the collaborators that I have
who could operate on me with total safety.
But with you by their side
Oh sure, you have to put yourself on the other side
and to control the smallest detail,
they cannot do anything that is not
they cannot do anything that is not
